I am 6'5 and have happily been using the Gitzo GT1931 Basalt tripod with my Arca B1 head for some time. When I started getting into longer exposure shots, I was starting to become unhappy with the image quality coming from some shake. This was mainly because where I was shooting was over a fence or a gate of some sort, and I had to extend the center column of 1931 to be able to clear those obstacles. As has been reinforced many times, shooting with the center column constantly raised is less than ideal.

So I decided to invest some funds on a tall pod. Unfortunately, the operative term here is funds. Many of them. The tripod that I decided to buy was the Gitzo GT3541XLS. At a little under $900, these sticks are not cheap by any means. Almost 3 times as expensive as the GT1931.

My first observation when opening the box to the 3541 was that it was about the same size as my 1931. The plate is much larger, and the legs on the 3541 are thicker, but overall size was not that far apart.

Weight wise, they're also pretty close. The 3541 weighs approximately 4.3 pounds where the 1931 weighs 3. For long hikes, you may notice the extra pound, but just in handling them, they feel pretty similar. Not like one is twice the weight of the other. Keep in mind that basalt is heavier than CF though, so if weight is you only concern, then the 3541 is double the weight of something like the popular 1541T.

Size wise, this is pretty much where the similarities end. The 3541 is HUGE when expanded. As mentioned, I'm 6'5 and can stand under the 3541 when it is fully opened.

As for features, both have the ALR and G-Lock features. The 3541 has a leveling bubble on the plate whereas the 1931 does not. Both can be brought down to ground level as their legs can expand out at a full 90 degree angle. The 3541 is a 4 section set of legs, whereas the 1931 is 3.

Good information, thanks! The photos are very helpful. But $900? Yikes.

I'm also 6'4" and I went with the Gitzo GT3541L with the Gitzo ball head GH3780QR. It helped that there was a rebate when I purchased. But ouch. $449.95 for the ball head and $849.95 for the sticks. Ouch is right! But it is solid and works well and his not so light enough that I will take it on hikes.

Stability Test:

Here is the test subject (fire truck). The focus is on the word Fire on the symbol. Scenario is legs fully extended, Arca Head, 70-200 w/ 1.4x extender for 280mm. IS off. Filter is Singh-Ray Vari-N-Duo w/ ND turned up except for the first shot, which was to set the scene. I will put exif above each crop. Mirror lockup. Remote Trigger. Live View zoomed in at 10x for focus.

We have Hurricane Earl spinning off the coast of New York (I live by the Long Island Sound), and the best wind I could get was approximately 20 MPH gusts. I wish I had a job like a meteorologist where I could be wrong 90% of the time.

Very helpful info.

For those of us that can't get to a shop that has these in stock could you be kind enough to post the dimensions of the useful mounting plate diameter, and the maximum and minimum outer diameters of the leg segments.

Thanks in advance.

As requested:

The rubber across the top plate covers 3 inches. The base of my Arca B1 head fits perfectly on to the mount unlike where it hung over the edges with the 1931.

The diameter of the top leg (thickest) is 1 1/2 inches

The diameter of the bottom leg (thinnest) is 3/4 of an inch

Excellent, thanks.

My Kirk Ball head would fit just fine on this.

Certainly sturdy enough for what I have now.

I am wondering if it is sturdy enough if I ever manage to get a 500 f4 and gumball head though.

When I was looking at this pod, I found naturescapes.net. It's actually where I bought my pod. They had someone asking about the 500 f/4 on the 3541XLS. A shooter chimed in that he shoots his 500mm VR on it with no issues and that it's more than stable for his needs. The person asking the question ended up buying the 3541XLS over the 5541LS and seems happy with his decision. Also shoots a 1D3, so that some added weight over your setup as well. This pod is rated to 39 pounds, so the 8.5 pounds of the 500L plus a body is well under that weight rating, even if you use the "only put half of the rating on the pod for maximum stability" rule of thumb.

Just read the reviews on B&H's site for the pod as well, and a couple of the togs are using this with the 500L. Go sell a kidney Lester :)

I have this tripod for my 500mm f4 and it is plenty stable. Also I'm only 5' 8" and the extra height come in handy all the time when shooting on an incline.

Great review. Thanks!

I had a couple more questions as I am thinking of buying the same tripod. Hopefully these were questions that you were concerned about too, and I will appreciate your feedback.
1. Since its 27" closed length, how would you transport this during air travel? Carry-on?
2. I'm 6'1" and I was wondering how to calculate required tripod length, i.e. column-less tripod minus RRS BH-55, Canon 7d and difference between eye level and actual height?
3. Any recommendations for a tripod bag and strap for this tripod?

Thanks!

Thanks for the pics. Without them I don't think I would have been able to fully appreciate the difference in size!
