Your "b+w" version looks very blue to me. Blue was my first impression upon seeing it. Below is a comparison of one of my b+w film sunrise photos. Note the color difference.

I'd like to get your opinion on whether you think this treatment looks OK. Thanks for any and all comments.

Yes, I purposely chose to use a tone on my b&w conversion. I would call the tone kind of a "steel" color. I thought it gave the image a more interesting look than pure black and white. I think the tone I chose to use gives the image an even colder look to it which I thought added to the "anti-color" sunrise. That was my intent anyway and hopefully, I was successful.

I'm big into black & white but for something like this, color is really the one that stands out, in this case the colors made the photo come to life, just my .2 cents (yes 0.2 not even worth 2 anymore nowadays)

Thanks for the comments. I'm trying to improve my color to b&w conversions for landscapes. My concern was the blown out area where the sun is just peeking over the hills. I did like the subtle differences in shading between the hills and forground in the b&w silhouette.

Here is the color version.

Way better in color and an outstanding shot. Is this single exposure? How much post processing?

This was the 0EV exposure from a bracketed set. The rendered hdr image showed the forground much better but I decided I liked the forground almost sillouetted as seen in this single image.

I did very little pp. Other than crop, I boosted the clarity and vibrance in ACR. I may have done some NR once opened in photoshop and a couple of other minor tweaks.

The b&w works better than I would have thought, but I still like the color version better overall.

Then you probably should not call it black and white if it is rather blue, right? Call it blue-tone or steel-tone, but don't confuse it with black and white imagery.

I apologize if you feel I've been deceiptful in my choice of topic title. I did convert the color image to b&w first...then applied a tone to that. In retrospect, using a title such as "Steel Sunrise" has a nice ring to it. :D

Classic case of why atmospherics rule in landscape ...

In your original I like the steel blue print tone but think the dead space at the bottom of the frame doesn't properly support the sunset. Here is a print where I cropped to make the sky feel vast. I wanted to see more detail in the land, more textures and shapes. I didn't think the large tree / bush on the left really fit with the rest of that line.

Thanks again for the comments and for the edit jetcode.

The image I posted here was cropped to remove some of the forground already. I wish I had angled my camera up more to include more sky when I was taking these shots so I could keep a 'taller' aspect rather than panoramic. It's hard to tell in this image but those light shafts were shooting right over my head.

Really nice capture. I prefer the color too.

Perhaps a lot of the success of a B&W conversion is the initial selection of the photo to be converted?
