I know that high key, high contrast, high dynamic range, high "POP" is where a lot of people are taking their photography lately, but for some reason, I keep finding myself drawn to this particular image.

Very low key, no "Pop", but still, for me it just seems to have an enveloping serenity about it. A peacefulness that (I hope) goes beyond the fact that I took it, and remember what it felt like at that moment.

And, it makes a great Wallpaper for my computer!

Does anything come through for anyone else, beyond just a gray morning?

I like it and agree that not every shot has to make your eyes bleed. There seems to be a small amount of vertical banding and I'd be tempted just to tighten the sky up with it being so featureless. Otherwise perfect.

I really like it - especially the far shore in fog.

maybe a bit brighter and a B&W tone would make this a really nice and calm picture.

I will give toning a try, but as to the brightness, I think that might just be a "difference in monitors" issue. The histogram shows a max brightness of 217, and staying reasonably full till then (by that, I mean the 217 is not just an errant spike). Because of the subject matter, and feel I wanted, I clearly did not want to go to 256. I think in the 217 range is about right.

And on my monitor, even the islands are not blocked up black. I see some texture there, so if you don't see that as well, then it most likely is a darker monitor than mine.

Well, one might say that the photography is taking the photographers rather than the other way around. It does seem that fads pop up and eventually become kitschy after a time. I can see this being the eventual destination for HDR.

By the way, my understanding of low key photography is that it is an image that is overall greatly underexposed with subtle highlights. So I don't know how one would define your image. Zen-like perhaps?
