Something looks weird with the B&W conversions. 1 and 7 have halos around them. 4 & 8 are winners for me.

Nice work but yeah the B&W looks over processed. That's the coolest ring shot that I've ever seen!

I love 4 and 8 also, but the black and whites aren't doing much for me! try opening the orginal into photoshop,...
.
.
duplicate the layer 3 times,
.
turn the top layer bxw ( desaturate)
.
change it to overlay
.
merge layer 3+2
.
desaturate again and it should look better!

heres one i done of #3 the black and whites turned out alot sharper when i used the steps above! try it and let me know what you think?

To beat a dead horse worth beating . . . Awesome ring shot! Great DoF and colors.

It looks like the B&W ones might have had some minimal high pass done on them or something, just guessing.

Love the color shots - the B&W's don't do much for me as far as these comps...

Ok, in summary +5 on the ring shot and a -6 on some of the B/Ws :D

Ring Shot - I have tried many sets of rings to get to stand like this and very few do, I think its the wedding band, as it had diamonds all the way around and gave it some grip. I actually took this picture in the parking lot of the reception hall. I wanted to use the sunset but the parking lot was full of, cars. Go figure. There are actually two directly in the frame of this pic just below the horizon line. But they were no match for the 100 L's bokeh. And this is with it even cranked down to an f-stop of 6.3!!

B/Ws - My thoughts are this. I REALLY dont like the standard B/W conversion. I try to always add some grit and texture to them, whether it be from LR using clarity and raising the contrast or photoshop and TRA's BAMF 16 bit conversion and the result you see is directly by my choice and desires. I know its not for everyone but it has started to carve out a niche for me in the sea of photographers who are far more talented than me. I have yet to have one client do nothing but rave over them, but truly, your thoughts have got me wondering if I have missed some clients because of it.

My question to the people who have graciously given me your feedback, do you feel it something you stylistically do not like or truly a detriment to the actual photograph itself? Thanks for all the help out there, I really do appreciate it!

Back in the day, B/W photography was really different from Color - the way the light exposes the film (explained to me in a nutshell) and the film's reaction to the light.

B/W photography involves getting the right exposure and contrast to show off the assorted black and white and all the shades of grey in between...

I tried the "digital way" of just changing a color pic to b/w and it didn't quite work out...

You can do it with your pics - will just take some post-processing practice and possibly how you shoot the original photo.

Its not that I can not do a B/W conversion that is more a traditional looking, its just it does nothing for me.

But this does:

I completely agree that I am not doing a "correct" B/W conversion because I am going out of my way to NOT do a correct one. My question was more from a stylistic standpoint, what people preferences are.

love the ring shot .... at first i didn't like the b/w use to having more contrast, but looking at the style u shot it got to say it works for u - if the clients book u on it looking this way well stick with it
