I'm going to be at the Smokies for 3 days in mid-October. Does anyone have suggestions for things to see? So far I am thinking about catching a sunset at the summit of Chimney Tops, a sunrise in Cades Cove, and visiting some streams/waterfalls.

The most fun I had was parking at the "Quiet Walkway" pull-offs along 441 and having a stream all to myself. Of course, I went to many other places like Laurel Falls but those were pretty crowded.

Clingsman Dome. Excellent panoramas if it's not to smoky, Fontana Lake (external link). To really experience the smokies you need to get away from the crowds. Get a good map of the trail system and find some day hikes. Bring rain gear and watch out for bears.

I like Cades Cove (will be crowded unless you get there when they first open) and the Greenbrier Section on Hwy 321 from Gatlinburg. The Greenbrier Section normally is less crowded than the other local places, and has some great stream and old cabin & barn opportunities as well.

Pic #2 is from the picnic area before the entrance to Cades Cove!

Cades Cove is great about mid-October (actually any time!). Go early in the day when it first opens or late for the best wildlife. I have seen rams butting heads in the morning in October. Last time there were hundreds (literally) of deer - too many and so tame I got out of the car and set up my tripod within 6 feet of one and it never moved. The historic buildings there are very picture-worthy also. At that time of year the foliage should be near peak if the weather has co-operated. So you'll also want to get to higher elevations to shoot that. Other than the week-ends when the fall foliage is on display, the park shouldn't be that busy that time of year. It's a very popular park, but during the week it should be relatively uncrowded - very busy on week-ends tho.
