Whelp I came across a wonderful copy of a 50mm Mark I yesterday on craigslist, the first one that has popped up in my area in the last 2 years.

I was going to purchase a 50mm 1.4 at some point and was just waiting for a good rebate or a used one to pop up. I think this is the next best thing while I wait.

I have owned a 50mm 1.8 Mark II before and was pleased well enough with the quality but I did not like the plastic mount, lack of a distance scale, funky MF ring location, cheap build quality or dust inside.

So in that area, the Mark I satisfies.

I will post some sample photos later tonight. :)

Oddly enough I picked up the same lens yesterday off of our local craigslist too.

How much did you get it for, and how much do they go for these days?

I saw one going for somewhere in the $180-$200 range, about twice as much as the MKII.

The seller was trying to sell an old rebel film camera with a zoom, flash, and the fifty for $75. I offered him $40 for the fifty and we had a deal.

Only way to find this lens cheap anymore is when someone sells a film Rebel with it attached and doesn't know any better.

Now that's a great deal. I can't understand why some people are willing to pay ~$200 for Mk I when for another $100 they can get a faster lens with USM (50mm f/1.4).

I think people are willing to pay lots of money for the 50mm 1.8 Mk I for two different reasons.

Partially for the collector value, and partially because the Mk I is almost indestructible and will never break down like a 50mm 1.4

I have the MkII and the 50 2.5 Compact macro already so it looks like I have a collection. I think the mkII will go to a good home somewhere else now.

Whelp I paid $50 for it as it was being offered with a Film outfit for $100.

It seems that these lenses in mint condition (With the gold sticker for collection value) average $150 and can shoot north of $200.

Just like Mike said, these things are rugged strong and will continue to last another 20+ years without a hitch.

So I played with the lens tonight and I can see that I will need to set up a custom AF setting for it on my 1DIII but thats fine, I have to with all the lenses that I have.

My 1DIII has been in for the Sub Mirror fix so I guess setting up custom AF files for lenses (even my L lenses) is just something that I will have to deal with.

I got mine for 120 euros few years back and it's lovely. A touch soft wide open but then you know that already. It's great for giving that wonderful portrait glow. You see it's not necessarily a weakness :)

Congratulations on the "new" lens!

how many 50 1.4 have broken down on you. This whole build quality is such a pile if bs. I've owned lenses for 40 years and never has one broken down on me, and I don't baby my gear.

Many people (including Lensrentals.com) report higher than normal AF failure rates with the EF 50mm 1.4 USM. The failure rate seems to be about 20% or 1 in 5.

The Canon 50 f1.4 joins the list this period. Autofocus motor failure tended to hit hard at about one year’s use, which is why it hasn’t shown up until now — we only started stocking this lens about 18 months ago.
