G6 -- LCD goes white/black

Greetings ...

I've had the G6 since it first came out and love the camera. In recent weeks, the LCD had started to act up ... occasionally freezing the image when taking a picture, then fading to a white screen, then fading to an inverse (or "negative") of the frozen image before fading to black. Typically, switching modes or depressing the shutter button would fix it.

Today, the camera started up with a white LCD screen and nothing can get the image back. The problem seems to be limited to only when the LCD is folded out 180 degrees to the left of the camera body, which is how I typically use it. If it is swiveled 90 degrees (perpendicular) to the camera body or if the LCD is rotated and folded back behind the camera (so the screen is viewable underneath the viewfinder), it seems to work fine.

I'm thinking/hoping it is a loose wire or connection in the LCD screen as I'd hate to get rid of the camera. Can someone point me to instructions or provide some details as to what I would be looking for ... and where?

Thanks in advance,
Jason

The cables of the swiveled Electronic View Finder can be damaged, but usually it is only a loose connector that can be easily pushed in place again.

You can read/download the G6 Parts List on this link (external link).

If pushing the connectors in place does not solve your problem, replace the HINGE UNIT, LCD part number CM1-2533-000.

It will be easier to find the complete LCD UNIT part number CM1-2534-000

The manual has no instructions, only technical drawings of the disassembled camera with numbered parts and a list of the parts numbers to order spares.

Page 4 has the LCD UNIT SECTION and page 5 the corresponding parts numbers.

Removing the covers requires some skill and a lot of patience and organization to mark every part and screw to reassemble the camera successfully.

Good luck

P.S.: The first post of the Building a G-Series Infrared Camera sticky thread has a link to the web gallery of Don Ellis where you can see good pictures of a disassembled G1 as an example of how the opened camera looks like.

Thanks for the info. I've taken it apart, and all of the connectors look to be securely in place. (You're right about the screws.)

I may take another look since you posted the diagrams, but I'm not very confident.

Thanks again!

At the risk of asking dumb question, where would I get the parts from? Is there an online Canon catalog that has the pricing information. I've not really found anything on Canon's Web site.
