My older computer is ready to bite the dust. Everything you buy now has Windows 7 on it which from all I have read is not compatable with photoshop CS2, or lightroom before version 2. I have Photoshop CS5 upgrade, which upgrades from of course my photoshop CS2 on XP, and I have lightroom 3, which of course upgrades from my lightroom 1.2.
Why in the hell (pardon me if that offends someone) would Microsoft or Adobe not have sense enough to put this software where it is compatible? What kind of idiots are they.
Sorry for my rant, but I read on other sites a lot of people are just as pis*ed as I am about this.
Anyone got any suggestions? I was gonna buy a new computer and install XP over windows 7 but that seems to have nightmares also. There is probably a thread on this already, sorry, if someone has a solution please let me know or point me to a thread......

Mad as hell in Atlanta

The old way to do it is to buy a new computer and reinstall the OS in there and make it window xp.

Can't you just get a new computer without an OS already on it and install XP?

I did that last year, I didn't want Vista so asked the computer supplier to not install it, then stuck XP on when it arrived.

I have windows 7 on my new laptop and I'm not a fan of it, so you won't be missing out on much.

Problem is, are most of the new computers hardware going to be XP friendly? Be my luck I would buy a new one, format the drive, go to put XP on it and half the hardware won't be supported by XP......either way a lot of are screwed...

This is just a fact of technological life. I'm typing this on an Apple Powerbook G4 which, in 2005, was a top of the line professional laptop. But since it doesn't have an intel dual-core processor I haven't been able to install a wide assortment of software over the last few years. Eventually everything now will be incompatible or obsolete with then. Part of that is corporate greed, but part of it is a necessary aspect of progress.

Excuse me if I am a little dense. If you are willing to upgrade your s/w, what's the problem? The LR 3 download is the complete program and if you have an upgrade serial number you don't have to have a previous version already on your computer, only to be able to supply the LR 1 serial number. There is no reason why you can't cold install the LR3 upgrade on a new computer. I don't personally know about PSCS5, but I imagine upgrading to it is much the same.

I like Windows 7 a lot more than vista... Windows 7 is just fast, just like XP. :D

and yes you could dual boot it so that if you got problems with xp then you could switch to win7.

How about trying Window 7's XP compatibility mode. I have read conflicting reports about CS2 and Windows 7, some people saying it won't work at all and others saying it's working fine for them.

Here's how I think it would work.

1.Right-Click on .exe file and select properties.
2.In the properties window click on compatibility tab.
3.In 'compatibility mode' click on 'Run this program in compatibility mode for:'
4.Select Windows XP (Service Pack 2)
5.Click on apply. click OK

Not sure if it matters if you have a 32 or 64 bit operating system, but you may have more luck with 32.

Personally I find Windows 7 a huge upgrade from XP, very stable and fast, much like XP was when it was released.

Can anyone point me in the directions on how to do a dual boot on a computer?

When I was dual booting Windows 7 and XP here is what I did.

First thing I did was partition my hard drive. My original XP install took up all of my C drive so I partitioned it into a C and D drive.

Next you need to set your computer to boot off your DVD-ROM in you bios

Once this is done you put a copy of the new operating system you want to install in your DVD drive and then restart your computer.

When your computer starts up you should a screen telling you to push any key to boot off the CD. Push on one and setup should start. Do a custom install and choose to install on your new partition, NOT on your partition you already have your old operating system on. Otherwise all data will be erased from the drive.

After you install the the new OS and you restart your computer you should get a screen asking you what OS you wish to run.

I'm pretty sure this is how I setup my computer for dual booting. Please remember to backup important data before trying this, just in case something goes wrong.

CS2 does actually work just fine under 7 as my friend runs it without issue. The only thing you have to do is manually select the installation path because it defaults to "Program Files/Adobe" which is the default 64bit path, just tell it to use "Progra~2/Adobe" and it runs fine.

However as stated, if you have CS5 and Lightroom 3, what's the problem. You don't need to install the older versions to upgrade, just give the new versions their serial numbers when asked.
