Probably a silly question, but...

I'm just basically looking for a fancy shoulder bag for lugging to parties where people dress fancy, or to walk around with something that doesn't scream "mug me" by not looking like a "Camera Bag". Any ideas anyone?

It doesn't have to be a camera bag, I could always just put in a cheap insert off Ebay..

Billingham has bags up to $500 with the insert included.
Domke has bags up to $250 with insert included.
Both are stylish.
But ,,,
I have always found it wiser to get non photo bag and buy seperateinterchangable inserts.
You can buy cheap to expensive that way and any size color style.
I use Domke inserts and get my bags from luggage stores to discount houses.
Just interchange the inserts from small to large bag.
One of my bags - Oversized - is a Calin Klein that I got free by buying after shave at dept store.
It is stylish and smells good !

The Crumpler series have fantastic color combinations and look like a messenger bag. I think they're very stylish. The Billingham's are the top of the line.

But I'm sure you know that anything big enough for camera or computer equipment looks like something to rip off.

Get one of the Think Tank Retrospective (external link) series bags in black. I have the 20 in pinestone.
Holds a ton of gear and is comfy and I've never been given a second look walking down the street with $7000 in my bag. Looks just like a old school shoulder/messenger bag.

Oh, this was exactly what I meant in my post. I was looking for some stylish non photo bag and getting a cheap insert from Ebay.

:( This is why I thought of getting a non-photo bag and getting a cheap insert from Ebay
Don't know about you, but to me, with the $100-300~ I would have spent on a good "camera" bag i would have bought another lens or have upgraded to a 50D

The only standard messenger bag that will hold up that I know is the one used by NYC bike messengers, made by Manhattan Portage (external link). It's about $85. That might work.

You get something cheap, it'll be cheaply made and fall apart, especially with the weight of a body and some lenses.

Domke has a new messenger bag, it's amazing. But I use the F-802 and it carries my standard gear. The canvas bags are amazingly tough and useful. It's more army-navy type so no one thinks it's camera gear.

The promaster westport 1047 is an attractive bag or tote. I think its for men and women even though it looks a little bit like a purse. Being a man I will most likely put in a water repellant canvas like briefcase to avoid looking strange. lol I won an auction for $14 total including SH Update about this bag. It is smaller that it looks online and is more suitable for my large Finepix S2700 SLR style point and shoot or maybe a small DSLR with a 50mm lens at most. The shoulder strap has no padding, and overall padding could be thicker. More velcro would be better for the dividers and there is no zipper on the top flap.

the kelly moore bags look awesome.
unfortunately, the boy bags are on backorder.
i plan on picking one up, when they're back in stock.

right now i use a chrome messenger bag with a tenba insert.
i use the chrome bag for school everyday, so when i need to take my camera, i just put in the insert.

Depending on who you are, I've liked the Jill*e (external link) bags for a while. I've gotten a bag from their Jack collection for men. (external link) They look good, have TONS of space, and generally don't look like a "typical" camera bag.
