I have been taking mostly RAW images, processing them with RawShooter 05. The images that require no processing, I convert directly to JPEG, however, it doesn't seem to be quit as good as the same image that I have just allowed the camera to do the compression.
I realize the flexibility RAW offers, however, is it possible that the compression algorithms in the camera are better than the RSE software? Almost all the JPEG's I convert I have to sharpen up to look as good as the JPEG shot with the camera. BTW- I do have the "apply sharpen" selected in RSE.
Anyone have any thoughts or opinions on this?

thanks

I don't do any sharpening during raw conversion. PS is much better at that. See the TLR website (external link) for ideas on how to improve sharpening.

It's hard to say what is better or worse.

It is very clear that they are different.

With most image editor programs, you have complete control over the variables, like compression depth. Just within the camera, you have very limited control.

Jim, you will love those tools! It took me about 2 weeks to truly grasp what the sharpening tookit was doing, but once I caught on, I had to go back and rework many older pics.
