Been noticing a lot of Jupiter and Milky Way shots lately and thought I would add my best attempts. The Milky Way shot has a good deal of trailing (used a nifty fifty) but I was impressed with the amount of stars and nebula I was able to pick up. With a new baby, a tracking mount is out of the question...for now.

The Jupiter shot is my best to date. Looks different without the south equatorial band (SEB) which apparently fades every 3-15 yrs. Again i am limited by my mount here.

There is a shadow in the lower right that may be Jupiters moon Europa, not sure.

Nice Jupiter. What scope is that with?

My pictures: John Wilke Photography (external link), Flikr (external link) , Facebook (external link), Fine Arts America (external link), Canon 1D MkII N, 1D MkIII, various Canon and Tokina lenses. :D

I like the Jupiter shot. It was well captured, even with the high ISO.

For the Milky Way, halve the exposure time and the ISO for the 50mm lens, or put on a wider lens for that exposure time.

With EXIF including

Camera Maker: Canon
Camera Model: Canon EOS DIGITAL REBEL XSi
Image Date: 2010:09:06 01:05:29
Focal Length: 250.0mm
Focus Distance: 1.26m
Aperture: f/5.6
Exposure Time: 0.100 s (1/10)
ISO equiv: 1600

I'd say the Jupiter shot was definitely "afocal" through some 'scope.

I'd like to know too. Am.

Yes, the Jupiter pic was taken using eyepiece projection through a Celestron C80ED 80mmX600mm scope. Ill see if I can find the link to my setup.
Edit: found link https://photography-on-the.net …php?p=7859419#post7859419

I know my settings for the Milky Way were far from ideal, i just wanted to capture as much data as possible. Definitely not a picture i plan to print, was just for fun. Once I get a tracking mount than ill get more serious.

Taa. That makes it afocal projection rather than eyepiece projection. Good looking gear.??? Am.
