This was my first time I've ever tried using flash while photographing highschool football.
I'd love some feedback!

They look good technically, though I wish students would be more original.

I have never seen a smoke screen like this! Very good series Jared.

Girl in spirit fingers isn't all that 'spirited' if you ask me :)

Doesn't Lebron James do the 'throw dust in the air' thing before his games? I think the first picture is the better of the two spectator photo but I think you placed the audience too low. Maybe if we saw 3/4 or the entire body of the first row, it would be better. The second spectator photo doesn't seem so exciting as it should be. The only person that looks enthusiastic seems to be the girl on the left in the first row

snicker from the West Marin County faction .... :)

On originality it's simply a matter of reference. These images are fairly stock as is shooting a game. It's been done so the secret is to find something unusual and new to present to seasoned viewers or wow them with the spectacular. I get similar critique in literal silence. My images often sink like battle ships in this forum.

I really like the first shot. It's a unique crowd shot that is really interesting. Nice job.

I agree with the comment regarding girls not looking spirited enough.

Baby powder smokescreen is original in material choice but the smokescreen effect in the stand is not - one sees that every week in any of the televised Italian Serie A matches when the camera pans to spectators lighting up their flares.

What is striking about the smokescreen shot is the white palms of the students (and in this general view of the stands, those palms are not obvious at first). If there is another opportunity to reshoot, think about how you can emphasize that aspect with the resulting talcum powder cloud - perhaps getting closer and framing two or three spectators throwing the powder as they reveal their white palms might be more effective than a sweeping view of the stands.

If it's in focus, it's pornography, if it's out of focus, it's art.

We've still got 8 games.
This was my first night shooting with flash, so I stayed a little calm.
And thanks for the idea of the white palms
