edit: Unfortunately, most of the images are test shots and deleted.

When I got my first "advanced" P&S- Sony H5, I shot 3000 shots in the year I had it.

Next I got the Rebel XTi, with it's 3fps and no lag I nailed off 10,000 in a year.

Most of those were test shots, learning how to use the camera. The only time I really load up on photos is if I shoot a wedding or something and pack on a hundred+ photos per hour. Now with my 5D being a slower camera then the 30D or 40d, I'll be taking less pictures then ever!

Just because the camera can do burst shooting doesn't mean you always should.

When I first got my first DSLR I would constantly follow my buddies around the school and then pop up in front of their face and hold down the shutter squeak squeak squeak squeak as their facial expression changed and wonder how they should react

Ahh was good fun... not the greatest idea though, but it was my first time with a DSLR so I couldn't resist  Guess there is a reason why I'm at 19k shutters just 5 months later

there's just something really wrong in what you espouse! :)
I mean who wants just 1 picture (e.g. 1000 words) when in the same second you can have 7! :)
Who cares if none of them are really what you wanted! :)

Its kind of like superman taking the bus to work when he could have flown!

Given that shutter mechanisms have a finite life, why would you want to take 7 images when one will do, especially if none of them are what you really wanted?

And if you're of the 'sell before it breaks' school, what will potential purchasers prefer; a camera with 70,000 actuations or a camera with 10,000 actuations?

I'm not knocking cameras that are capable of fast burst rates, but I do believe there is a time and a place.

Bought a 5D Mark II a week ago and have almost hit the 5000 mark. Nothing more than a few photo shoots and some fooling around and I'd say it's broken in nicely

Good to see some of use our cameras for what they're intended to do, work the crap out of that shutter :D

If you keep your camera's shutter momving fast enough, there is never enough time for dust to collect on it

I really don't worry much about shutter life, if I ever get there with one of my cameras I'll consider it a milestone, hopefully by them my photography would've improved much, much more! Also I hardly ever shoot more than 1-2 shots at a time, not crazy about having the same photo x 3 or 7 or 10, makes no sense to me unless you're shooting portraits, specially kids portraits!

I feel the same way, that's what the shutter is for, use it and don't worry so much about it's life expectancy, most people don't hold on to their gear (specially bodies) that long anyways.

I compare it to having a car and keeping it in the garage not to put miles on it, unless you're a special car collector it makes no sense either, sad, but I have a brother-in-law like that, he rather drive his crappy car on a long trip to keep from putting miles on his new car....... go figure!

Exactly.

And I bang my GF as much as she'll tolerate.

I bought my T2i in June or July, and have nearly 10000 clicks on it.

I took over 1300 at Mosport during the ALMS races a few weeks ago.
