Hey all

Submitting some equipment to my insurance for coverage and realized that my 5DII grip doesn't have a serial number but my 7D one does what gives?

Thanks!

Little things like this doesn't come with serial numbers. Anyway, you don't need one to get it insured. Just show them the grip and the receipt and your done.

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

When I saw the headline I also grabbed for my 7D and looked. I don't have any 5D, but my 7D's grip has a number too.

also read somewhere that any genuine canon item sold by a authorized dealer will have warranty regardless of origin of the item. whether the dealer gets it from canon usa or a different source, warranty applies if you have the receipt from them

Both grips on my 7D & 5D II do not have serial numbers. They are not grey market grips either, as far as I know of.

Glad I found this thread, just writing down a long list of serial numbers, my old 20D grip had one, but the new one for the 5D MK II does not. It should not be a grey as it came from Warehouse Express here in the UK

I contacted Canon Professional Services about this a couple years ago when I was registering my 5DII and grip with them (which can only be done with a serial number).

For some reason, the BG-E6 for 5DII doesn't have a serial number. It has nothing to do with gray market or anything else. None of the BG-E6 have it. CPS had no idea or explanation why. Probably just a manufacturing oversight.

All other Canon OEM grips that I've seen or used do have serial numbers.

Recheck that 7D grip...authentic BG-E7 do have a serial number... It can be hard to spot... Small numbers engraved in the corner of the black bottom plate (with the tripod mounting socket in the middle).

also read somewhere that any genuine canon item sold by a authorized dealer will have warranty regardless of origin of the item. whether the dealer gets it from canon usa or a different source, warranty applies if you have the receipt from them

Not true... For example B&H Photo and Adorama in NYC are a couple of Canon's largest authorized dealers and they both sell USA and gray market (they call them "import") items. The USA items will have USA warranty coverage so you can send an item to either of Canon's US service centers for repair/service under warranty, if needed. However you buy a gray market Canon item from these particular retailers, instead the store warrants the item and you can only send a warranty claim to them. The store will repair or replace at their discretion and generally offers a warranty period that's equal to what Canon offers. Not all retailers will warrant items themselves like this... May offer only shorter period or none at all, or even charge extra for a 3rd party coverage (Mack, for example, altho it's more commonly sold as a warranty extension)... or the store might even be gone shortly after you buy the item (a reason to buy from long-established, recognized stores). So a gray market item bought at other retailers might or might not have any warranty coverage. If you choose to send that gray market item to Canon Service instead, you'll have to pay for any repair/replacement.... No warranty there!

Gray market items are when the store sends their own purchaser to Japan, China or where ever to buy stock in large quantity, and then import the items themselves. They can save a few bucks per item doing that and pass some savings along to the consumer.

In a sense, it's silly. We're more and more a global marketplace every day, so products should have a worldwide warranty... Particularly items like cameras, lenses and related accessories that people are inclined to travel with and might need repaired while visiting some foreign land. (Thus, one reason for CPS for travelling pros. Members have access to priority repairs at service centers all over the world, perhaps not honoring regional warranties, but usually discounted.)

Yea, no serial on my BG-E6 5D2 grip that I got directly through Amazon about two weeks ago.

So the problem still stands, how do you add it to your CPS Products? I got it in there, but used the serial number: 1111111
