Herein lies the rub. My favorite for that CF tripod is the Markins Q3t, as it will fit between the legs when they're inverted, and make a tight package for carrying on a backpack.

But if you're taking it out of the trunk and don't care about the portability, the Markins M10. It has a bigger ball, which is easier to position.

The rub is that these run in the $300 range. The Manfrotto 488rc2 and 498rc2 are super, rocksolid heads for less money.

If the 3441's speak to you but you don't care about the lightest weight possible in a tripod, email Kerry at ReallyBigCameras and ask about the other CF sticks in the line, which may be a bit heavier, but less expensive.

Yes it's becoming 600ish. I guess I'll try 055 with 498 (just 280 or so after rebate) and see if I want a lighter one in future. Thanks.

I know more about gear than I know about photography :p

The Manfrotto's are bulletproof and will last a lifetime.

Only if you stay away from ocean or salt air environment. Mine suffered heavy deterioration after one yr's of use mostly near the ocean.

Steel or aluminum?

Exactly why I went for the CF version. I saved a bit by opting for the 496 head over the 498. I figured if I was releasing the ball anyway, I didn't really need the pan option. I think it is about a $50 or so difference.

Where would you go for accessories or parts? I've never seen that line in any of my local camera stores, but all of the stores I go to carry the Manfrotto line.
