Copyright on 550D?

I can't seem to copyright pics I take using the auto mode... is this a fault or should it be this way?

Do you mean your trying to add copyright info in the camera? It won't.

You need to do that as part of your Post processing.

I have a T1i and you can add copyright info on the EXIF using the EOS Utility

On the 550D, you can enter both the author/creator and copyright data directly on the camera. But the menu where you do it is probably not visible if you are in any of the simplified modes.

Only the owner's name tag must be entered from EOS Utility.

None of this needs to be done in post-processing.

Yeah... this makes sense!

Like you say, I only get the shortened menus on the simplified modes!
