I did a quick search but didn't come up with anything.

I really haven't gotten into this whole video thing as much as I would like. Mostly due to lack of knowledge and what I feel are acceptable results without spending the thousands for extra video oriented accessories.

Anyways, I having been looking for a follow focus on the cheap for quite a bit of time now and it just hit me;

I use EOS Utility in studio when working on product sets in still photography. In the program you can adjust focus with a serious of buttons, ranging from small movement, to larger movements to full infinity and MFD.

Wouldn't it be relatively simple to rewrite this part of the program to be a digital follow focus system? Has this been done? Am I just crazy in thinking that it could be easier than adding additional motors onto a lens that already has quick responsive motors in it?

Any input on this would be great.

On a side note View Factor seems to have taken this to another level and has built a follow focus switch that directly enables control of the lenses motors.

Thank you for your reply, but I really don't see how that has anything to do with my question.

I am aware that redrock makes a great mechanical follow focus, and a really cool remote system. But it still uses external motors, gears, and focus wheels.

I think the best results would be with a remote follow focus like the one redrock micro makes

a software bases follow focus using the lens's motor I think would be less precise

Also I don't think you will have live view streaming to your laptop while recording and without some sort of live viewing feature or reference of where your subject is you wouldn't be able to make the proper adjustments

redrock uses wireless remote, follow focus motor, and a sonar sensor to automatically focus.

www.freshdv.com (external link) has the video on it. check it out!!

my recommendation, shoot in like F22 with killer amount of light, make sure everything is in focus, then, simply create a transparent blur mask with a hole in it for your focus point, key frame it in after effects.

otherwise get a mechanical one, its WAY less work.

Those are both very cool. That is very cool, but they still use external motors.

Are for accuracy being an issue with the internal motors. I really don't think that would be an issue. Most cameras record the focus distance in the metadata and thus be figure out from the focus what that distance is.

I'm assuming that this concept has yet to be explored.

this guy raves about it

Cameron Romero 3 months ago
Marc Alfonso from PLC Electronic Solutions brought his demo unit to the set of "The Auctioneers" on Friday night after his long day at Cinegear and business dinners. I got to physically handle this product two days ago and I cannot say enough how impressed I was with the product and with Marc.

We ran behind-the-scenes footage of him using the device to pull focus and hit 9 different focal lengths over the course of a wild crane shot we used a Kessler KC Lite 8 to achieve.

Within 20 minutes of arriving, this device was strapped to the crane, synced with his iPhone and calibrated for the Zeiss 50 prime we were shooting.

It took me four takes to nail the move, but every inch of the shot is in perfect focus...

This is one of the most amazing devices I've ever seen.
