Just noticed that my recently acquired 85mm has some noise... it focuses well and fast, however when i physically (gently) shake the lens alone in my hand it sounds like there is something clinking inside...This troubles me a bit...is this normal? It does not sound broken or loose, but there is definite noise. I am hoping that this is normal sound of the interior components/focusing motor, etc.

Camera is a 550D and the only other lens I have is the kit 18-55. 85mm was my first purchase as I am only starting out (about a month so far) and I was interested in portrait photography.

550D, 5DMk II, 85 f/1.8, 70-200 f/2.8 IS II, 24-105 f/4, 580EX II.

gently shoot mine. It rattles a bit as well. Sounds like a 'solid' rattle more than like something is broken in there. My thought is because there ARE moving parts in there, a bit of rattle would be normal.

from ken rockwell's site (external link):

"Modern AF lenses often run dry without grease. They are made to focus with as little drag as possible to help reduce the drag on the AF motors. Therefore most will clunk a little bit and have some play."

i'd say its a solid rattle as well
