Nikon has announce their G12 answer. Looks interesting with a 28 - 200 mm zoom, but not very sharp looking sample images so far.

I was kind of surprised that Nikon would be so blatant in copying Canon. Kind of reminds me of the Russian copy of the US Space Shuttle (Buran). ---------------

Looking at the back of the P7000--it looks like Nikon has listened to comments made by Canon G11 owners. Ms Jannie (sp?) had quite a thread going here about her G11 ergonomics until she sold it... I believe Nikon's optics will be at least as good as G11. Interesting to see what G12 brings. D700 24-70, 70-200VRII, 50/1.4, 85/1.8,105VR, Tamron 28-75, 24-120VR, Σ20/1.8

Well.. imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. RF 24-70 f/4L IS | RF 24-70 f/2.8L IS | RF 70-200 f/2.8L IS | RF 50L | RF 85L | 600EX-RT x 3

You might want to get your eyes checked. The difference in design is quite substantial to be called "knockoff". Nikon actually knows how to design a camera. Look at the place on the back to place your thumb on. That's exactly Canon designer should copy. D700 24-70, 70-200VRII, 50/1.4, 85/1.8,105VR, Tamron 28-75, 24-120VR, Σ20/1.8

It's very close to a perfect all around Digital Camera for travel light. If G12 can't match, I will go for a P7000 for some travel uses or for the days that I don't want to bring my DSLR backpack. It's sample pictures on dp look good too. So, now gotta wait for G12. I actually doubt that the G12 will have a super zoom lens (with f/2.8 on the wide end). Never owned an advanced prosumer P&S after the SONY F828 and I feel quite excited after reading the P7000 preview on dp... Canon, come on let's catch up in the next annoucement with something more interesting than the unneccessary unreacheable super long reach upgrades, a disappointed 60D and a super niched 8-15 extreme wide zoom... The Nikon can be controlled by remote. 2. Autofocus AND zooming are FUNCTIONAL during filming of video. 3. An external microphone can be plugged in. You could set it up wirelessly and mic someone through a lapel mic or any other kind of wireless system. This would allow for field interviews while setting the camera on a tripod. The P7000 kicks the G11's butt. BUT how will Canon up the ante? I agree and unless I understood it wrong it also fires flash wirelessly and I think the audio for video is in stereo... Be good and if you can't be good, don't get caught. - John Chandler

You can get a good field recorder (the kind that make it so you hear a bug munching on a leaf), hook it up through a wireless system (or corded) and film bugs in macro mode. Or walk around with a Shure Dynamic wireless microphone (about 130 bucks) and interview people. Not bad. Thank you.
