Apple released iOS 4.1 this morning, which adds "automatic" HDR to the iPhone 4. After installing 4.1, the first thing I did was test out the new HDR feature.

Here's the "normal" exposure:

Here's the HDR version:

Impressively, the 3 exposures used to create the HDR version are taken all at the same time, with a single shutter click (sound). I can't tell the difference in image capture speed between a single exposure (HDR Off) or 3 exposures (HDR On). There is some additional processing time AFTER the image capture for the HDR version, but it's only a couple of seconds.

This feature is going to come in very handy. In fact, for the first time, I am contemplating selling my point and shoot camera (Canon G9).

I hope Canon would also. But I think someone (Nikon?) has it patented. Sony does it!

HDR for the masses... In a way, that kind of stinks.

I wouldn't be too worried, I mean it's nice, but come on it's a very small sensor phone camera.

HDR is so subjective. some like the outrageous and some like realistic. There's room

It seems the tech above could replace the gnd filter which is quite cool.
But the art of hdr is in the processing.

I'm gonna dig having this in the phone. Now, either it ain't perfect or I'm getting to be mr. Shaky Hands™, but I've yet to take a "perfect" shot with the HDR feature. There's always something, even if small, out of alignment from the shots.

Look at the top-left of the sign to see the missed alignment. The shutter action is no different between the HDR & normal shooting modes, it just has a longer processing time at the end, so I wonder if there is an actual difference in the times of the composited exposures, if even very short, but long enough for shake to become apparent.

Still, having it is gonna be fun. The camera in the iPhone 4 continues to tickle me with what it can do (external link).

For the record, the resolution of the iPhone 4's back camera is 2592 x 1936.

The days of the VGA-quality phone camera are over.
