There was some activity of Northern lights tonight.
As soon as the sky was dark enough the aurora started to dance.
It was very nice outside, 10C, so the conditions were perfect.

I have only reduced the size of these images. So no adjustments have been made, just to show the performance of my new toy :)
I straightend the horizon on image #2

I also tried to use the video function of the 7D. You can see the light move but that's all. The quality is not the best.

I think that you really need lots of snow to reflect the light and very high activity to make a good video.
But it is very interesting to do a video of the aurora. I will need a bigger CF card since I only have a 4gig now.

Nice captures once again!
I've owned the 7D for over half a year and have yet to try shooting video.I'll have to get a larger cf card as well.

Thank you, it is a great camera.
To say it nice I will not wear down the camera with the video function.
I didn't miss it on the 40D but it's an nice option

Thank you, That is a medium fast aurora. My bottom image was a fast mover. I have seen them start at the horizion at east and move west in under 1 minute. And when the activity is weak they don't move at all. Same color and brightness all the time. Last night was nice, since when it got darker the aurora started to show very weak and then it got quite intensive. Multiply the light intensity by 10 to understand how bright it was in real life. The video doesn't bring justice at all. But it caught the movements and the pulsation of the light.
I only adjusted the exposure and saturation to make it more visible. I used iMovie so you don't have that many options.

Great images ArcticShooter! Our only issue is, soon it will be bitterly cold and standing outside for long periods of time in that cold at night isn't on my fun list.

Here it doesn't get much colder than -12C as a minimum. Mostly it will be between +2 and -2C. Thank to the coastal climate. But the weather is very unstable due to it.
But it can be windy so I need to dress warm. I bought a new jacket from Canada Goose so I should be covered. I will travel to Spitsbergen/Svalbard in the winter so I will need that parka. I think the temperature there could be compared to your climate. I need some good warm pants so I have to get me a warm pair soon. Any recommendations?

-12C isn't to bad at all. Where I am it gets down to -40C, with windchill I've seen -60C. This is mid winter though, like end of December to late February is when it gets really cold. Those are the times you shut your blinds and don't even think about outside

Yeah, I am not complaining. But due to the air it feels very cold at -12
Inland climate is drier so it doesn't feel so cold. But -40 is cold where ever you are. Must be nice to be a polar bear then ;)
