They do work well.....but after seeing them every day for about 9 months now I'm ready for something else haha.

What is interesting, if you look at some of my other sunsets in my FLICKR dated back in june or whatever, and then look at them now, you can really see just how much the sun shifts its position as the seasons pass.

The motivation starts to wane after being inside a small box a few Km's in area for such a long time. You just run out of things to take pictures of. Now I find myself waiting for interesting clouds, maybe going into a different village to change the angle etc. I think I've used up every vantage point on our base by now.

Nat, really nice pics! Good to see what the country looks like other than the news clips showing just military action. Thank you for serving and be safe out there!

I agree. I really enjoy your photos. It looks like Afghanistan would be a beautiful and fascinating place to visit, if it weren't for the war!

If I could get a "day off" over here to just walk out the gate with only a camera bag and go take pictures I would absolutely do it. I'd probably be a bit nervous and on edge but it would be well worth it to be able to actually be out there on my terms, able to completely focus on taking pictures.

However you aren't allowed to go outside without a minimum number of people, your armor, your weapon etc etc etc.....You have no idea how many afternoons that I'm not too busy, I look outside the wire and wish I could just walk out and just go meander around the villages and take pictures.

I even feel bad for embeds. They have to stay within the confines of going along with military patrols. You never get to stay in one place long enough to really dig yourself into the real substance of life here.

There are incredible stories just waiting to be told, you just have to accept the risk to get 'em. Maybe it wouldn't be worth it for a vacation, but for a serious documentary or photojournalism project, I wouldn't hesitate at all.

Like most reportage, the greater risk often gets the story and the shot no one else gets.

Besides, one guy with a camera isn't a very high payoff target ;)

Do I sense a shift to photojournalism (war) once you've done your bit? Sounds frustrating in the least to be cooped up in your wee fox hole, but I'm sure plenty more opportunities will arise soon enough.

no enlarging, thats telephoto compression for ya. :D It's one of my favorite advantages of using telephoto lenses. The oil rig was over a mile away if you can imagine that.

Here's another one with a sunset:
