...our wished for what features a new camera gets and what Canon puts out are so different. Over the years here at POTN we have seen many new cameras come out. None of which come close to what we want. Things we think are important just don't make it. When the 30D came out it was essentially more MP and larger LCD, that's it. Then the 40D, then 50D. I remember that when the 5DMII was a rumor people suggested that it would have to have things like 21 AF points, faster FPS and dual card. But none of these things made it. If fact it was just more MP, oh yeah and movie mode. I really think the 7D may be the only exception and its what people where asking for during 30D days.

Why do you suppose our expectations are not aligned with reality?

Because markets to everyone, not just the enthusiast. And I think they're repositioning their lines...

They created cameras that will appeal to the enthusiast with the 7D and 5DIIand are now remaking the XXD cameras to appeal to the entry level DSLR user. I think the Rebel line of cameras will disappear before long...

What's also funny is that every time Canon does fulfill our wishes, we whine about the price!

Canon is a big business to make big money. If they gave you everything you wanted all at once, you would not buy anymore cameras from them. They will slowly ease out features so that every couple of years, you reach into your wallet and shell out a couple of grand for that new camera with the new features. Very simple from where I sit.

Maybe because we tune our expectations a little too much to what others say they should be on the boards, and not quite aligned with what we really need in our day to day shooting? :)

I think users also have outsized expectations of what can be included at a particular pricepoint. The pressure to include features, but not erode the market for their existing top shelf product means you sometimes get a camera that doesnt match expectations. I would love the 5DIII when it makes its eventual appearance to have 7D like focusing, and a flash controller. But if you add much more than that you dig into the market for the full frame 1 series.

I agree with what you say except for the last line. The Rebel line will be around for a long time. Not everyone wants big body. That are heavy and difficult to carry.

I see the new lineup as:
xxxxD = lowest cost solution
xxxD = enthusiast small solution
xxD = enthusiast large solution + a few features.
5D/7D = serious enthusiast or pro small solution
1d = pro

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

I go with this. I'm a devout Category 2 (xxxD) mostly because the rebels fit my hands so much more comfortably than the xxDs.

I think the rebel line will evolve. As they convert the 60D into a high end rebel, you still have to protect the entry level of the product line (like giving away the first free hit of crack). Look for some updated version of the XS class in the near future. Something with limited features, but a low base price.

As the saying goes with technology...because it can be done doesn't mean it should be done. Primary example, including video in a still camera. :rolleyes: I'd much prefer a DSLR that doesn't include video at all. IMO, it's a BS feature most pros or advanced hobbyists don't care about or even want.

All I want is a camera with the best accurate exposure metering available, perfect or near perfect AF points, and various other features specific to "still" photo capture. If they offered this in the future then I'll fork out thousands upon thousands for the body without a second thought. I bought the t1i as a "hold over" until someday Canon gets their head out of their arsh.

Nice thing about software features is that you don't have to use them. I on the other hand dumped my video camera because I so rarely shoot video and the 7D and 5D do just fine. I'm very happy that video is there. :)

Well, you could fork out for a 1D MkIV.. It does have all that and more.

Video feature is fine with me. If I don't want it, I just ignore it. As long as Canon doesn't devote their entire R&D money to make better video in dSLR and producing video lenses while foregoing their their efforts in making better still cameras.

I've seen people who've done amazing video work using Canon 5DMarkII. In fact, the season finale of House was filmed using Canon 5DMarkII.

The only reason for me not to want video in dSLR is because I may be tempted to learn more about video editing ... which means more time and a whole lot of money to purchase hardware and software :) But that's just my silly reason. I'm perfectly fine having videos in camera.

Apparently I wasn't clear the first time...

I do NOT want video at all in a still camera. I also do not want to pay for that feature since I have no plans to use it. I want a still pro camera that takes nothing but stills. If I wanted a video camera then I'll buy a camcorder.
