Just got the word that I am allowed to take pictures for my high school's sporting events. The athletic director is working on making me a field pass so I can be out with the pro's. I am very excited for this opportunity to expand my work/talent.

However, my bank will be hurting soon. 300 2.8 IS(maybe) will be mine soon :x Sometimes I hate being 17.

Dave, my little buddy... It was literally just months ago we had to change restaurants for dinner because you got carded!

Which reminds me, I think I missed your 21st... Happy belated if I did.

Well, last night what our home opener and I spent it in the crowd with my friends instead of on the sidelines...I know. I did that for two reasons: 1) It's my last season home opener I will be able to go to as a student. 2) I wanted to see the motions of the photographers and what they were shooting with to get a hang of where I will have to stand to stay out of their way.

Anyways, I saw 4 photographers.

1) Nikon; 1 body - 300 2.8 + 1 body - 70-200 2.8
2) Canon; 1 body - 70-200 2.8 IS + 1 body - 24-105
The other two photographers never ventured over to where I was standing. Looks like they were using the 300 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 IS though.

So, my field is very well lit. Still not well enough to be able to use the 55-250. But now is decision time. I don't know if I want to just go with the 70-200 2.8 IS or go with the 300 2.8 IS(maybe). I really don't have enough money for the 300 and all my paychecks will be going towards paying it off for a number months. Or, I could go with the 70-200, pay if off in ~2 months, and suffer the loss of 100mm. I just don't want to regret not getting the 300 in a couple months.

It also doesn't help my decision that I am also into nature/wildlife photography and the 300 is a nearly perfect lens for that...

EDIT:
I forgot to mention, I also take pictures of hockey and will be taking pictures of the school's soccer season. 300 for soccer (although they do play on the same field as football), 70-200 for hockey. This just keeps getting harder. You can never win

Please don't remind me. I'm probably going to grab a 40D eventually so I can throw the 17-55 on one of the bodies for hockey but other than that I think I've made my decision to go with the 70-200 for now. If I need longer eventually, I'll sell it and grab the 300. But, I don't find a point in spending $3,600 on a used 300 2.8 IS and not NEEDING it.

I will be bummed when I want to go out and shoot some nature/wildlife though.

You will soon learn that you no longer have a lot of time to go out and shoot nature or do much of anything else.

I'm going to Baltimore next weekend for a Orioles/Yankess game. Guess what? Even though they allow my 70-200 f/2.8, I'm not taking a camera into the park. I'm going to enjoy the time with the family. Then it will be back to shooting HS games up to 5 nights a week and on weekends.

Have fun on the sidelines! It's great.
