It's been raining a lot and it's green all over, consequently I've been doing a lot of nature shots recently. Couple of photos of butterflies for C&C please.

Ah yes, our resident crusader for all things SOOC and condemner of digital darkrooms. Seriously dude, get off your high horse, you're telling me I just wasted all this effort trying to get a soft look in post when all I had to do was mis-focus?

note to self: "Next time, don't focus and save yourself a lot of time post processing."

p.s. I believe you also forgot to mention the fact that the colours are not natural

Critique Corner is just what it is, getting feedback.

Teknophobia, you should try to appreciate feedback even when it is not what you are expecting to hear. Most feedback from members are looking to help out, GDane's post is an opinion of course. I do agree with his critique BTW. Be positive with the feedback from members and click some more pictures!

As anyone who's ever critiqued any of my images knows, I enjoy constructive criticism, that's the only way I can improve. I post only those images in CC which I feel need something more. GDane, however, appears to belong to that school of people who, if they don't understand it, will put it down. I have a lot of issues with that.

And, for the record, the colours aren't natural :)

GDane123 has a point, and I agree with his views about your photos. They are soft and OOF
Why would you not want a sharp picture of a butterfly? dosent make any sense to me.

looks to me like you did waste your time....people post in this section because they want feedback about their work they want to know what they can do to improve a shot or make it better next time.

since you didnt start out by saying that you made it soft on purpose and explain why you would want to do that, and add to that ask what is the picture missing what kind of feedback do you expect?

Please explain your artistic reasoning for the soft look of a butterfly and the fake colors? then you may get some constructive feedback.

As a self proclaimed pixel peeper that first thing I look at is the sharpness of the picture? if it is not sharp it goes in the bin.

so here is my feedback your picture is OOF and bokeh looks fake, as well as the colors......since I have no clue as to why anyone would want a soft picture of a butterfly thats all I got for you...

You actually spent time PP'ing these?

If these look good to you, then no amount of cc will help you improve.:(

Nobody wants to take OOF pictures of butterflies.

If you want critique you have to accept what the critics say.

If you like them the way they are, out of focus and all, why ask for comments.

Maybe this SOOC (Converted from RAW ofcourse) shot is more to the liking of everyone here?

I guess I overreacted, but GDane has been somewhat inflammatory of late. If you look at his photobucketalbum, all you can see is a case of sour grapes, someone who has tried some amount of colour isolation and given up his attempts at image editing and who now keeps displaying blind hatred towards anyone who edits images.

A couple of additional photos to illustrate

There are people who will prefer a over b and vice versa, doesn't make either of them better than the other. They just appeal to dofferent aesthetics

Hey,

Now that we are all calm......

Both are a little oof or have some movement on them, they are hard to get right but persistance will pay off. Keep going it's a great feeling when you hit the mark, think you are on the right line!

I guess it's just me, but I like pics like these soft, can't change the way I feel :). For these pics, I set sharpening to 0 when converting from RAW, they're also 100% crops as I wasn't intending to shoot butterflies when I had set out. Let me look thorugh my old images and I will put up a few technically correct flower shots, tripod, MLU, razor sharp and IMHO, absolutely cold and lifeless :).
