Three days till vacation and..

The famous Error 99

Yes sure re, after trying everyting, changing lenses, memory cards, cleaning lens, contacts, shutter, blowing out CF unit, reformatting I still get a error 99.

I leave for vacation monday afternoon, and my 300D has stopped working

I esssentially NEED this camera, and there there is no chance I can afford to rent a body. Does it on both my lenses, memory cards and in all conditions. Repair places are closed till Monday and I leave at noon.

I certainly need ideas, what possibly can I do?

Did you try removing the battery from the camera and reinstalling? Also try cleaning the contacts between the lens and the body.

If you have a bettery grip, check to see if it's loose. It can also indicate a problem with the shutter (possibly stuck).

Try also taking out the memory (small) battery. It's also in the battery compartment.

Shutter seems fine, I can take images but can't download view them. Comes up corrupted and error 99 displays.

I believe that err 99 is a general error ... which can be a combination of any of the errors where a more descriptive message would be displayed.

Do you only get the message when you download images using USB from the camera? Or are the images corrupted when you try to use a card reader?

when i download no matter what, when i try to view on and off camera.

Although, removing the cmos seems to have fixed it for now...stilll going into canon when i get back.

did u try and remove the little battery and take that out as well for a few minutes

not just the big one but the little button battery as well ?

Calgaryphotographer - For you I'm glad that your camera is working again.
You can avoid that camerafreezing in the future by switching the camera off when changing the lens and the CF cards.
And if it's happening again just take the big battery out and wait a few seconds before to reinstall.
Good luck on your vacation and with your camera, hope you can take lots of nice pictures with it ...

I had this on the first evening of my hols. I had not taken any pictures. I had not taken out card without camera being turned off etc. I tried removing the big battery and the card without success. In the end the cure was to reformat the card in the camera. Might be worth doing this before you go

That's probably what is causing it. Changing cards, lenses without shutting it off.

Changing cards without shutting it off yes......... That can cause issues.

Changing lenses with it still on should not cause issues (YMMV as I have not had any issues on my 10D/20D).

I had a freeze once with my 20D. I arrived on location after about 1.5 hours drive turned on the camera to shoot and no response to the shutter button.

Took the main battery out and the camera was OK but the battery was warm and almost dead. I think the camera must have crashed with an actuator powered.

Now the battery was not at full charge before this but I am sure it was not flat either.



As soon as I got home I ordered a spare battery, up to that point I assumed I would run out of memory before I ran out of battery.
