1. A 300 f/2.8 or longer; 2. Flash.
Last season I rigged up my flash. Didn't get good results. User-error, most likely. Also tried to save a bunch of money for a 300 f/2.8 to shoot with this year. Came up about $2k short on that one.
I'm playing with the cards I have right now ... a 70-200 f/2.8L on a 7D, no flash and sideline access to games of our local HS. Here are some examples from pre-game through 4th quarter in complete darkness under the lights of a very well-lit HS facility.
1) 6:00 pm. Pregame was overcast Friday night
2. 7:10 pm first drive of the game
3. 7:30 and second drive of the game.
4. 2nd quarter, probably 8:15. Daylight almost gone, stadium lighting taking over. WB still reasonably good.
5. 8:30 pm. It's dark. Start of 2nd half.
6. 8:50 pm 3rd quarter. It's all the way dark. Only light is artificial at this point.
7. 4th quarter. After 9pm. Pitch black outside stadium. WB is horrible!
Shooting with a 70/200 f/2.8 and no flash is what it is. I'd like to have the longer lens and a 580 EXII with a battery pack that allows for burst shooting. Would have exacting WB and some real 'pop' to the color.
And in the hands of a better shooter, the results would likely be better with the gear hand I'm playing with this season. All things considered, I'll take it!

I don't care much for the look of flashed football and I'm so thankful for the high ISO quality on the 7d.
