I am planning a trip to Alaska sometime next year and was hoping someone could give me some advice on best time during the summer and some suggested places to photograph. A cruise is out since my wife gets motion sickness so we will be flying in and ??? Thanks in advance.

The Alaskan cruise has no sense of motion with it - its almost all inland waters that are dead calm. And, I think it is a great way to have your first visit of the state!

Check out the Green Tortoise. It's a great way to travel and they do a couple of Alaska tours.

Get you wife some ginger pills. The Navy uses them for motion sickness. Must see Denali National Park, Fairbanks, Anchorage. I went up four years ago. One week on land and one week on ship. Had a great time and can't wait to get back. I went in June, but the next time I would like to try late October or early March, for the northern lights and Iditadrod dog race. This would be nice to be out in some checkpoint when the dog sleds comes by.

we flew into anchorage and rented a motorhome, unlimited miles. we put almost 1900 miles on in 2 weeks.
cheaper than a car rental+ motels + restaurants.
we went in late july/ early august, weather was nice, comfortable.
go south out of anchorage towards seward, plan on 2-3 days in this section. take the cruise out of seward you will see wildlife up close, well worth the money, also get the buffet, best deal we found for food.
then head up to Denali, wonderful place, give yourself time.
if time still permits head to fairbanks then run down the richardson highway, to Valdez. crown jewel of alaska.
then run the only road back to anchorage.

just a side note, a subway 6 inch sub meal was only $11.
1 day car rental was $145
motels, when you can find them run between 100-200 a night.

note motorhome rent out quickly, we reserved in january for a july vaction and almost didn't get what we wanted.

don't delay too much if you really want to go.
pm if you want more info.

I lived in Alaska for 6 years. Places that are a must. Denali national park: take the bus trip whilst there you won't regret it. Venture down to Seward and take a boat tour of Kenai Fjords national park (motion sickness take Dramamine you really HAVE to go on a boat at some point!!! You have to see glaciers calving and Sea Lions eagles otters it's all spectacular). Another great place... where I lived... is Valdez. (driving from anchorage to Valdez is probably the most beautiful drive in the world!) The city itself is ugly because it was rebuilt after the 64 earthquake, but the area is gorgeous! As far as best time I would go late july/August. But be careful, it can seriously rain for weeks at a time. So be prepared to not see the sun.

If you want more detailed information PM me. Too much good stuff to list here in a coherent manner.

Thanks to all that replied. We are on the last few days in Alaska. It has been wet but what a beautiful state. We did not get to do everything we wanted but we will be back. We did make it to Seward for the cruise and the drive was great. We made it to Hatcher Pass but did not have time for Denali. Every place we saw up here is like a postcard. I need a whole summer up here. I am looking forward to coming back.
