How do I do this in PS...

Okay here goes... I have a preset in LR3 that I got quite some time ago called "Edgy Vintage" ( Karin Knowland); I love this look for lots of different images. I have some examples that I just shot this weekend (before/after).

My question is this: How do I recreate this in PS CS5? I am moving toward using Bridge and PS for my total workflow. This means that I am going to have to learn how to recreate some of the looks that I like PS, and I am willing to do that, just not sure how. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I could see most of these being done with adjustment layers and blending modes. Number 1 could use select my color and then contrast and hue/saturation. Number 2 looks to be a simple saturation change with perhaps a different layer blending mode.

They all take time to play with and see what the combination of the layer mode and blending modes will do for you. Don't forget the power of masking.

It would appear that these are not yours since you are asking how to do it. You do know that you are not supposed to append the actual image to others work, only provide a working link.

Thanks for the suggestions... the images are mine, I processed them using the LR3 Preset, but I want to learn how to create the same effect in PS.

Heh! Well, that's an interesting question! How to replicate a Lightroom preset in PS shouldn't be all that hard if you are familiar with working with Photoshop layers and pallates and whatnot.

Your preset should have made adjustments to several LR controls, in various panels -- Basic, Tones, HSL and Split Toning are all liable to show tweaks (and in the HSL panel you are liable to see adjustmentn in both the Hue, Saturation and Luminance sections. If I were you I would examine each panel, see what you can figure out for yourself, then ask about a specific area of adjustment -- some will be adjustment layers and some will be adjustments specific to color channels, etc.

It might be a fun exercise to "re-engineer" a Lightroom preset in that way -- it's just nice to see people getting cool enough presets in Lightroom that it makes people want to figure things out in a "Photoshop" way.

You can open a preset in a text editor and read each setting that was adjusted. Try making the same adjustments in camera raw.

I do not use or own Lightroom, but see if this link will help. Apparently, you can transfer your Lightroom presets into ACR by exporting as a DNG file. http://x-equals.com/blog/?p=1257 (external link)

Open a Cr2 file in LR. Apply the preset. Save settings to .xmp
Use that .xmp in ACR.

You can then create a preset from that - if the ACR versions are the same, the images should be identical.

Ah, OK, I see -- it's possible that Sam would evidently just "translate" the presets from LR to Camera RAW

Sam, to double-check what you are asking -- you would like to use the PS Raw converter (Camera Raw) to apply the presets -- you are not talking about trying to replicate them in the PS editor. Do we have that right?

If so, good ideas above. The xmp file that René mentions is a quick way of saving all LR edits to a file that Bridge can read and the edits can be loaded into Camera Raw.

Now one pertinent question here: what version of Photoshop CSx are you using? The Camera Raw in CS5 and I believe Camera Raw 4.6 is compatible with LR3 edits; older versions will likely need some tweaking for the preset adjustments to look right.

Tony...

I really wasn't thinking about ACR when I posted the question. But with some of the suggestions it now makes perfect sense as to how that would work. I have CS5 and LR3... So that shouldn't be a problem.

Hmmm. I don't really know anymore. I tried to do a search for Karin Knowland but I did not
have any luck. I assumed she might have preset that would work in ACR or an action in PS that would recreate this look.

I suppose I could send it to you (don't think that would be a problem since I can't find the author to recreate the look. Let me know
