It took the entire summer to get a perfect day to coincide with one of the major fun fly events but yesterday was about as good as one can ask for. Warm, sunny, and only light breezes which shifted a bit all day but they weren't even worth worrying about. Because it was the final event I stuck with what works, my 1Ds2 & 35-350L did all the flying photos, and although I had it with me all morning the 7D was only used for the few static shots taken when I arrived.
Again because I couldn't risk anything I wasn't able to try Frank's suggested method of shooting in full manual so they are done using Tv with shutter speeds ranging from 1/200-1/320 for helicopters thru 1/800 for the prop planes.

Is that a true Zero?! I've read that there are only 2 or 3 in flying condition in the world. Anyway, nice shots.

Thanks for the comments & yes there are a lot of Zero's out there in that scale, but it is amazing just how real some of these look when the muffler or cylinder head are concealed. That Zero had an in flight problem on it's second flight & did something no one had seen before. While flying the sound of the engine really changed, and we thought the muffler was loosening off so the owner thought it wise to land. While setting up the approach we all saw something fall from it but due to distance we weren't sure if it was the muffler. The plane landed perfectly, but the moment the engine stopped the prop & hardware that's supposed to retain it all fell off. Turned out the spinner had come loose, cut deeply into the prop before falling off, & some bolts sheared while others backed out of their holes but while the engine kept spinning good luck retained them.
