Some shots from the Washington Nationals vs. the Florida Marlins this afternoon 9/12/2010... Totally poorly equipped to shoot at this one, shooting with the 135L (great lens, but not long enough) and the EF 75-300 f/4-5.6 III (LOL :D what a piece of dung) and shooting from the upper deck. In any case, I'd like to get further into shooting sports, so I'd really appreciate any commentary I can get, so that if I do get the chance to be closer to the field with better gear, I can make the most of it!

This photo is a near 100% crop:

A lot of these photos are really gnarly (high percentage) crops, and I wasn't necessarily shooting from the best angle, but I like to think that what I did was fairly decent for a total sports shooting noob. ;) In any case, I'd really like to hear what you guys thing, and what you guys would do to improve the photos.

They look great. Seems to be a general lack of love for MLB and lots of love for all things football.

Just my opinion, but shooting baseball from the stands is a tough deal. Unless it's a very small ball field (like a spring training game) you might be better off just watching the game and having a good time.

Almost all the guys that shoot MLB and even minor league ball shoot from the photo well as getting lower can be very helpful. Also most will use either a f2.8 300 or 400 and sometimes more . . .

So, unless you have access and big, fast glass you will only "record a minute in time" during a game and make memories for yourself. Now that is not a bad thing, but if you are thinking you are going to get images like you see in SI or ESPN the magazine you will only be frustrated.

If you love sports and baseball go to a local college, high school or t-ball game and you can get closer and capture more emotion with your images.

But, that is just my take on trying to shoot from the stands, YMMV:)

I love shooting baseball ... did u color them afterwards with dpp? I think #2 #4 and #6 contain way too much color. I shot at Coors Field (rockies stadium) last thursday row 18 behind the guest dugout with a 70-200 f/4 L and i thought even that was to far away :( So good job for shooting with a 135 from the second level :D

Wrong time of the year... unless you're shooting the world series, but that's a special case!

I think I'd have to agree with you... I didn't know how far away I'd be at first, but I stopped after the first 3 innings because the angles simply weren't great.

I did color them in PP. I'm slightly colorblind, so that might explain the colors being pushed a bit too much...:rolleyes: I'll take a look over them and turn them down a bit. Glad to hear you liked the pics though! They're all pretty drastic crops, but one must work with what one has!

No, I tried to get some of those, but the angle just wasn't working out.
