Hey all...

I'm about to upgrade to the 5D II. But I believe an upgrade is imminent. Does anybody have any details about the MkIII? Would it be advisable to wait for it... if it isn't too long into the future?

Thanks!

No manual focus needed :-D I used the tape trick, taping the three pins on the left hand side. Auto focus is very slow, it can take up to 5 to 10 seconds to latch on in lower light. In good bright lighting, you can use this extender without missing many shots. It is not good for birds in flight, but it was awesome for photographing large birds like great blue heron and vultures when you stalk them and you earn their trust. I really enjoyed using the extender with the 100-400 when photographing kayakers going down the falls at Great Falls National Park. The extra reach REALLY helped.. and the ability to shoot from 140-560mm is pretty awesome, with auto focus. I was able to keep the kayakers in focus in great lighting as they moved towards the falls, i was pretty happy.

Canon 100-400mm L + 1.4x III Extender - 100 vs 400 (external link) by Evan Animals (external link), on Flickr

I would also love to hear some criticism on this photo below, i used the Canon 100-400mm L with the 1.4x III extender. I am trying to decide, when i am this close to my subject, should i just forget about the extender and rely on the sharpness and the auto focus of the lens? Or use the extender to get the extra reach to get the almost full frame shot, lose a little quality and light and have slower auto focus.

edit: These were all shot without a monopod too. I am not comfortable stalking and using a monopod yet. I don't know if i ever will.. but the IS is fantastic.

Thanks!

Canon haven't given any details of what the Mark III will include and there are as many guesses as there are people guessing. But given the clear shortcomings of the 5D compared with the D700, and the fact that that camera is also due for upgrade, I think Canon will be very foolish if they don't introduce some radical changes. Chief will be to AF and noise at high ISOs, which the old model D700 is already ahead of Canon on.

The upgrade may not happen for a year, so it depends how long you are prepared to wait. After release of the Mark III, even assuming they've answered all expectations, there will be a period of low availability and high prices. Maybe six months or so after introduction prices may start to drop to their stable long-term level. Once people start buying the Mark III in significant numbers the used value of Mark IIs will drop, and if the Mark III really is as good as I hope and believe is necessary that drop in Mark II prices will be considerable. So if you're prepared to wait maybe 18 months then do it. Otherwise buy now and be prepared for a considerable drop in value. Your decision.

For me I never upgraded to the Mark II as I didn't see enough benefits over the Mark I, but by the time of the Mark III I shall want to. Whether I go for that camera or the new Nikon will depend largely on how good a job Canon have done.
