Canon haven't given any details of what the Mark III will include and there are as many guesses as there are people guessing. But given the clear shortcomings of the 5D compared with the D700, and the fact that that camera is also due for upgrade, I think Canon will be very foolish if they don't introduce some radical changes. Chief will be to AF and noise at high ISOs, which the old model D700 is already ahead of Canon on.

The upgrade may not happen for a year, so it depends how long you are prepared to wait. After release of the Mark III, even assuming they've answered all expectations, there will be a period of low availability and high prices. Maybe six months or so after introduction prices may start to drop to their stable long-term level. Once people start buying the Mark III in significant numbers the used value of Mark IIs will drop, and if the Mark III really is as good as I hope and believe is necessary that drop in Mark II prices will be considerable. So if you're prepared to wait maybe 18 months then do it. Otherwise buy now and be prepared for a considerable drop in value. Your decision.

For me I never upgraded to the Mark II as I didn't see enough benefits over the Mark I, but by the time of the Mark III I shall want to. Whether I go for that camera or the new Nikon will depend largely on how good a job Canon have done.

Thats what I thought/feared... But, I can't wait that long, so I'll be buying soon. By the time the Mark III is down on price I'll replace the 550D with the Mark II as a backup. Thanks for the advice!

I recently bought a 7D because I thought I would have to shoot action sports all summer (obviously not a 5D's territory), and for financial reasons I already had to sell my 5D II .. I'm doing everything in my power to keep it. The 7D, while a brilliant camera which highlighted some of the 5D II's short-comings, highlights all its strong-points even more. This really is a beautiful piece of machinery.

Thanks after having a 50D and 7D I feel this is right for me. I had a hard time dropping the coin on EFS lenses that the 7D needed and it seems that the 24-70 is a "do it all" lens that I can use for a long time!

I sold my 24-70 when I sold my 5D and got my mark II to shake up my wardrobe a bit further, and I still miss it a year later. A brick, but the most versatile and awesome brick ever. Not to mention, it's pure magic on a 5D. You'll love it :D

How old is your "little" brother? To have a new WRX in Britain if you're yound would be incredibly expensive for insurance - more each year than the car cost.

5D & 7D (both gripped), 24-105L, 100-400L, 15-85, 50 f1.8, Tamron 28-75, Sigma 12-24, G10, EX-Z55 & U/W housing, A1+10 lenses, tripods, lighting gear, etc. etc.

At 16 he would be unable to insure that car in Britain. I think he'd need to be at least 21, and under 25 he'd pay thousands each year for basic cover. My nephew had a new Alfa sports car when he was 19, and the insurance was almost $20k per year (equivalent) - and even that was with the insurance in his father's name.

It's far less than that.

I lived in the UK for a few years and quickly learned (er, was told, rather) that the only people with STi's are drug-dealers . You really never see anything past an 04-05 out there. I think I may have seen one 06-07, but nothing newer. It's unfortunate that all of Europe charges insurance based on the engine size (not that the scoobs pack a V8, but still :D) In the US, I hop on the family plan, get a 'good student' discount and a good driver discount, and I'm cruisin' :)
