Another trick you can use if you only have a flash and no gels/etc is to point the flash upwards and reduce its brightness, then up your iso by 2 stops and shoot at 1/60 sec. Use your hand directly behind and above the flash as a reflector, this way you don't get that direct glare and a warmer light due to it reflecting off your skin toned hand. It pays to experiment but the muted warmer lighting works wonders.

Here's a variation on using your hand along with the cameras flash... used my 50D...

Thanks... also if you only have on camera flash you can use your hand or white card to redirect the flash on to a wall and/or ceiling to bounce the light.

Sorry if I came off as an ass, I had no intention whatsoever to insult you... It could be a bit harsh though! ;)

it's a very sharp shot, and in no way meant to be a comment on his daughter - but I do agree the lighting is harsh and looks like a snapshot with a built in flash.

This was shot with my 70-200. Sorry about the jaggies caused when I compressed the file for an attached image.

bannedPermanent ban

I have literally gone through 150+ pages of this thread.

For those of you with the 24-70 f2.8, what do you think of the combo of it and the 135mm f2? I'm entertaining the idea of picking this up as a second lens for portrait and short tele use for my European cruise. I thought about the 85 f1.8 but I feel its too close to the 70.

Lastly, for a waist up portrait - is the 430EXII enough light or is more needed for fill light on a backlit person during sunset.

Cheers.

PS: Sorry about the hardware questions, pics will be up this weekend when my new toys arrive.
