I took these at Craters of the Moon National Monument (Idaho) this August. The snake was warming itself in the middle of a narrow road at dusk and I almost ran it over. I stopped the car, took a few pics then prodded it off the road with my monopod. Surely it was not long for this planet at its initial position.

Anyone know what kind of snake it is?

I think we're looking at a Bullsnake. They look similar the Western Diamondback Rattler and even mimic the rattler sound, but the tail isn't the same.

Thanks. I think you're right. Really an amazing animal to observe.

Also, it didn't seem nearly as agressive as a rattlesnake. It did not even strike the monopod as I ushered it off the road, although it did coil up in a strike position.
