I found this great site that has helped me out a lot. Often I wonder how certain looks are done and how certain modifiers work, what kind of look they create. Check it out.

I also found some really good creative set ups I didn't know I could do. If you guys have set ups you want to share be sure to include them in...:D spread the wealth! If I could suggest one thing for their site it would be to include a setting where you could select 1-light set ups or 2-light set ups or 3-, etc.

I know we have a thread on here somewhere about lighting set ups, which I'm also subscribed to, but do you guys have any suggestions to sites like these?

Side from strobist, of course.

True, though I'd think most could fill that in on there own. It will vary depending on where you're shooting exactly and what time of day, or with what available light...easy to figure out!

Haha, that picture is Pham's who regularly post great strobe photos on this board. I think you'll find that exact photo in the Alien Bee thread.

BTW as someone new to off-camera flash photos that site is VERY helpful, thanks for sharing.

I'm having a lot of fun learning from the set ups but I wish it would be all out portrait/glam/fashion and people rather than having the nature stuff in there too

I love browsing sites like this (and also try S.U.M @ Flickr) for inspiration and ideas!!

Still, if you get nothing from it, I envy your skills and knowledge !

Yes I realize, though it'd be nice if all the content on there was straight people :)

OK, I'll temper the 'value' of the shots provided, before people get too excited about the web site...

  • The graphics depict what is called the Plan view, which gives you and idea of the position on the ground of some of the things, but NO IDEA about how high the camera was, nor how high the LIGHT was placed relative to the subject, the Elevation view!
  • You have no idea what was done for lighting of the background, which is also an important element
  • You have no idea of supplemental subject lighting, like rim lights and hair lights. Once in a rare photo you do get some information, but not always. And again, you never get Elevation view information.

The still life shot of the drink was about the only one which I found to be reasonably well illustrated (a photograph of the setup, not merely a Plan view)

In general, you do get an idea of the size of the source, from the graphics. And you have information which is the exposure for the shot, but that depends upon the lighting cast and has no connection with trying to reproduce a shot as shown.

You need to give me OK to edit your image and repost! Keep POTN alive and well with member support https://photography-on-the.net/forum/donate.php
