Might have the chance in a few weeks to shoot sideline at a MLS game. Problem is it's at night and I have a 100-400.
From what I've been reading I need 2.8 so should I rent a 70-200 2.8 in exchange for length?
Thanks.

If you can, I would suggest you rent either a 300mm f/2.8 or a 400mm f/2.8. A 70-200mm f/2.8 will be a bit short for covering a majority of the action. Don't get me wrong you can shoot it with a 70-200 and come away with some good shots, but you are going to have to be patient and wait for the action to come to you.

PM Inbound.

The 300 or 400 2.8 would be the lens of choice for night soccer. I'm not sure of the high iso capabilities of the 7D, but you MIGHT be able to get away with f/5.6.....and that's a big might.

A lot depends on the level of lighting the stadium you are at will have. With the 400 2.8 on the 7D it would be a great combination if you are used to it but your field of view is small and it can be a hard learning curve to follow the action.
It will make your life easier if you shoot from one end of the field and get the players comming towards you.
I would rent a 300 2.8 and take your 100-400 just incase the lighting is good enough that you can use it.

Thanks for the input guys. I'm really not looking to spend a lot of money on glass just for one night when I haven't had any experience shooting soccer, but then again this could be a rare opportunity for me. I'll see how it plays out.

Go to lensprotogo.com or similar and rent a 300 2.8 and an extender or the 400 2.8, that 70-200 is only going to get you about 20% field coverage. Even with a 300 for soccer I often toss a 1.4ext on my 40D. With the 300 I basically resolve to only shoot the near half of the field.

Definitely don't have $180 to spend + shipping and insurance just for one night ;)

Check out Midwest Photo Exchange (external link) on N. High Street in Columbus. No insurance and no shipping.

Yeah I checked them out earlier but they ask for a deposit in the amount of the lens which I would have to get together and it would
be difficult for me to return it as I leave Sunday night and they open Monday morning and don't really want to leave it up to someone else to return it.

Gotcha. They didn't ask for a deposit when I rented mine. They must have changed their policy. Did you hear anything as to whether or not you'll be shooting the game? I think the Crew stadium has rather good lighting and you might be able to get away with f/5.6 and higher iso.
