I Just won an auction on Ebay for a canon 580ex II. I currently have a 430ex.

My plan is to use the 580ex II as the Master and the 430ex as the slave.

Do I need anything on the 430 to trigger the Flash?

I know the 580 will send the signal but I'm just unsure how the 430 receives the signal.

I've read some people use Pocket wizards for better reliability.

Please give me some input. Thank you.

just set the 430 to slave mode.

Yes, the pocket wizards will give you more reliability since it uses radio signals not infra red. with that setup (580 and 430), there has to be a line of sight between both speedlights. This will be tough when using outdoors.

The signal is received by a sensor on the front of the flash. The master flash sends a preflash that controls the slave flash. It requires line of sight, works pretty good inside, especially with bright walls where the preflash can bounce. Its less reliable outside, especially on bright days.
