Hey guys, I'm new here but visit many forums on a daily basis. I know that there are certain things NOT to do (things even not mentioned in the 'rules) that get regulars upset. Any known do's/don'ts for a newbie poster?

I have always been interested in photography and FINALLY had the means to get my first DLSR (T2i) a couple of weeks ago. I am loving it so far and it seems that there are some very knowledgeable users here...I know I can learn a lot from you guys.

Dont be snotty, and dont quote a photo in a response on the same page. Otherwise you'll figure it out.

Well, since I'm new to photography in general, I don't think it will be hard for me to not be snotty. ;)

I will also take a note about quoting pictures.

I have a feeling you will get along here just fine. You might be surprise how many people new to photography know more than people who have 30 years of experience, and they are happy to tell you so :)

We try very hard to keep this a friendly place, and we are pretty successful at it. Occasionally, however, we get someone who possibly didn't get their morning cup of coffee, and they wake up a little grouchy.

Do not engage them. If you feel you've been the victim of an ad hominem attack, or if you see someone just being gratuitously rude, report them by clicking on the little red triangle at the left of the window. Moderators are standing by to keep 'jerks' in line. (In fact, we have a 'Don't be a Jerk' Rule.)

Welcome to the Forum.

I'm not short. I'm concentrated awesome!

Stay out of the lens threads until you can stomach the attitudes. You can learn a lot here on POTN by just reading posts and studying the eXif info of the pics.

Hmmm, what are the attitudes all about? Lens preference or just people asking questions in general?

The lens forums get a bit confrontation on occasion as there are members who believe in only buying using L quality glass, there are another group that contends only idiots would spend that sort of money on L lenses. Yet another feel that its stupid to buy anything other than prime lenses. Basically there are factions and each passionately believe their path is right. Its usually not too bad, but occasionally the titans clash.

Ah, I see. Sounds like interesting reading.

Then you also have the non Canon lens users that swear their lenses are superior to anything Canon puts out in both price and function. Though it seems many have never tested both brands. Also some bad mouth a particular lens when 1 in 10 others have had no issues. Some of the discussions become very heated to the point of entertainment.

Hmm, so are these the Nikon guys or just people that use different lenses? One thing I really need to read up on is lenses. I want to know what lenses I should look into buying next.

Tamron, sigma, tokina guys. Third party lenses designed for canon use. Occasionally one of those companies will make a superior lens and then its users will lose perspective. Not that it doesnt happen with canon lenses as well.
