So am I correctly interpreting that the line of thinking in this thread is that the new finish solved any focus issues?

LOL, seems that is being implied.

I wouldn't say "solved" by any means, but it would certainly seem that they've refined their manufacturing process and or quality control.

100% of the lenses I bought with the old finish have not had AF issues. So maybe the old finish is better for AF? As long as we are trusting anecdotal stats here.

Agreed, give it a couple weeks and the same old "is my Sig30 soft?", "my Sig30 front/back focuses", "the new Sig30 is garbage" threads will be popping up alongside the usual "my new Sig30 rocks" threads. It's the same lens with a new (and worse IMO) paint job.

Edit: And my "old" Sig30 was spot on with my former XSi, and spot on with my 50D. The only time it misses at 1.4 is due to operator error, and needs no micro-adjustment.

Worse paint job? But the nifty fifty uses a smooth black plastic, and that is a FANTASTIC lens! :)

LOL, just my opinion. I prefer the old finish to the new...but that's just me.

I dont mind the old finish at all and could totally care less, I think the only issue was how the old finish looked with alittle wear, no?

Never mind; for those interested you can see the new finish on the 50/1.4 here:

Unlike the 50 f/1.4, the new version of the 30mm f/1.4 I received has the old EX coating on the hood as well as the manual focus ring part of the lens.

Hmmm, I also prefer the old coating. Gives it a totally different look to the canon lenses like the 50 1.4 and 85 1.8, which seem to have the same finish as the "new" sigma finish

They were all recalled for AF calibration. :)

I can't right now, but probably by 6 PM Central time today if nobody has something up by then.

It took me several months to find one on CraigsList, but I'm glad I waited- $325 in mint condition.

I have shot boxing next to Snaplocally many times over the last few years. We both use (used) the same camera (7d, 40d) but he has the Sigma 30mm 1.4 and I used the Canon 1.4. I always felt like I was trying to keep up with him image quality wise!! I now use the Sigma. I can't really say I see any difference to be honest between the two lenses image wise (90% of the time shooting in dimly lit armory's I should say). I never really used the 35 1.4 in a studio situation). I would say buy the Canon over the sigma if you plan on purchasing a full frame body (or 1d series) but that's about it. If I had to throw one of the lenses off of a boxing ring and hope it is still usable, I would trust the Canon to hold up better! But honestly they both feel pretty solid. Plus there is more satisfaction in making photo's look better than the competition with a lens more than half the price ;)
