Have you guys even read the spec sheet? The G12 added the front control ring that is currently in the S90/95, HDR processing, tracking autofocus, and stereo audio capture. As an S90 owner, I can tell you the front ring is very useful, and I'm excited about the HDR processing.

The HDR processing is really bleh.
You need to shoot from a tripod, then the camera combines 3 exposures and auto-tonemaps with who knows which settings.

You can just take your bracketed shots (even without a tripod) and process them at home in any way you want with any tool you want.

bleh bleh and double bleh.

What I do like about the G12 is the new "HS sensor" with improved quality in low light. I really need to check how that works, it can be "the thing" in the G12.

And you know this because you've tried the HDR, yes?

Probably just in camera NR. You can just do that at home too. ;)

If image quality is equal, then the Nikon will win this one by a mile.

The P7000 has the microphone input. That's very important for people who want quality sound in their recordings.

To be able to electronically zoom and autofocus while filming is important, especially the autofocus. The Nikon also has double the screen resolution. That's pretty big.

Canon didn't pull out the stops. They could have done a 4/3 sensor and kicked everyone's butt three ways from Sunday.

I'm not buying the G12. But I hope that those who do buy it enjoy it. It looks like a great camera.

Thank you. bw!

Eh, I'd say the bigger factor, if the image quality was equal, would be the more flexible lens on the Nikon. The external mic jack is ok I guess, but I image that the control you'd get from any consumer video camera that can shoot 720p would make them much preferable to using a point and shoot with a shotgun mic.

Of all the new "luxury" point and shoots, the LX5 looks the best with it's wider faster lens, smaller size, and sleeker design.

This may be a good time to grab a G11 as an upgrade for my wife as she has a crappy Kodak P&S POS .
Should the prices drop on the G11's soon ?

It makes the Nikon and the LX5 look even more tempting. As nice as the G12 looks, it doesn't exist in a vacuum. If the Nikon IQ is on the mark, it'll get many folks' money for the extra reach and mic input.

G12 looks as though it'll have great handling for stills with the new dials though. I'm tempted despite the Nikon and LX5 also calling :)

They've been dropping on the used market for a couple of weeks now. Take a look at the sales forum. You can get a fairly mint one for $350. And once the G12 has been out for awhile, I expect you can get a nice used G11 for about $325. At that price point, it'll be an awesome buy.

As for new stock, it's doubtful you'll see a significant drop before the stock is depleted. I think new it has hit bottom at $450.

They will come down. They were $386 recently (external link). I had an additional discount and picked it up at just over $350.

The link's attached to the post. It was at Newegg. I'd bet they will be coming down very soon as the S90 did.

HD video makes sense in a small budget almost-P&S gadget but the no-zoom while filming when nikons can was a disaster. the s95 can too so it was a marketing decision to limit models to sell others, when canon will finally learn and stop doing that for good?

I feel the same way as you are ...

But I hope they will fix that in updated firmware ...

But like I said before: I wait for the Nikon P7000 and the G12 to
come out and will see if the IQ is OK. Then I dicide on wich to buy.

Good luck.

Well just from looking at the Canon press release the G12 looks pretty awesome compared to the G10/G11. I'm not particularly interested in shooting video but that might change with the G12.
