Read the specs at dpreview.

In other words, no real experience. :p

i'm not going to be so quick to judge.... I'll let some folks work with it and see what it can do.

I think the G12 will be great. It just appears, on paper, that the Nikon is a better value for the money because it can do more. That doesn't make the G12 a bad camera. It's going to be better than the G11, but the Nikon could easily end up the winner.

However, this is a first-run Nikon, so it might end up a lemon. These things happen.

Thank you. bw!

In my experience with G-Series, they have always gone for best alrounder rather than most tricks or fastest/longest lens. Thats why they usually come up tops. The LX3 had them beat in numerous areas yet I know which one is stocked and sold more in my local area.

Im going to wait and see what reviewers think. If its headed in the same direction the G11 did, im in.

HD video makes sense in a small budget almost-P&S gadget but the no-zoom while filming when nikons can was a disaster. the s95 can too so it was a marketing decision to limit models to sell others, when canon will finally learn and stop doing that for good?

It could also be that the microphones will pick up the sound of the zooming.

For example, most small point and shoots have the zoom disabled during video, but it's not because of marketing decisions. You can do a hack on your camera (firmware) that makes zooming possible, but the microphones will probably pick up the sound of the lens motors.

This is fine if you are dubbing in separate sound, but if you are recording sound from the camera, the zoom will be loud.

It's a technical issue.

Thank you. bw!

To be interested in this over the G11 I just sold, the G12 will have to have better ergonomics and more substantial/tactile (as in not so cheesy) buttons, wheels, controls and even better image quality, I won't use the video.

I compared the S90's 480P to my now sold LX3's 720P and found both to be usable but neither good. I tried using the LX3's around the house and just couldn't imagine using it unless I had too. The E-PL1 had better video considering its small size.

I was wandering the same things. It's a shame that movie mode is 24 fps and not 30 fps,
at 720. I don't understand why they have crippled this camera?

Does this G12 support the TC 80 timer controler?

But OK, I wait until is available. Then I will compare it with the Nikon P7000.
I have a strong feeling that Canon this time has given to little for this G12.

Good luck.

4 posts in and someone brings up the "cripple" word.. Is that a record?

It looks like the only change is an "egrips" like material where your thumb should go.
I've done that myself with my '11. (egrips I mean). Helps a little. dpreview has pictures of the screen side of the camera in their preview.

See if I can crib it and post it here....

That issue has bothered me too. Closest I've come to solving it has been to use a Domke strap, and hang it from my neck. Except I don't like doing that with a P&S.

Good luck!

I wonder if the G12 will need a completely new underwater housing. I moved from the G9 to the G11 and now have both with UW housings. For underwater pictures good performance with high ISO is critical, so I might be tempted to move to the G12 if there is a couple of stops better performance in low light. It would be great if the G11 UW case would work with it.

I would guess a different underwater housing is likely since it has different controls. A few stops better in low light? I don't think so

The Olympus E-PL1 has a much larger sensor than the G11/G12. Much larger. Therefore it will get better video quality.

To look for video samples, go to Dpreview.com and check out the E-P1 (not PL1) and look at their video samples. It's quite impressive.

Thank you. bw!
