I was trying this the other night, and took the following shot at 200mm, ISO 100, f8, 1/80 sec.

I got essentially the same image shoting ISO100, 300mm, f/5.6 at 1/125 and 1/160th of a second.

I always figured he was about a half stop off! ;)

Seriously, shooting the moon is a fun way to test out a new lens, since you can compare your shots with so many others, of an identical subject in basically identical lighting, at more-or-less the same distance.

From an exposure standpoint, though, it's not exactly a trade secret. The first time I shot the moon, it was with auto metering. I got the same blown-out white blob that anyone else would get. It's one of those lessons we all learn eventually.

Curtis N, have you looked closely at the images posted here... do you see that some are actually shot from another angle... ;) (the aussies moon looks very odd and "upside down").

This picture (taken with my old Nikon Coolpix 5700) was two-in-one. I wanted to show that amazing shine of the moon on the snow covered hill, but if I did that, then the moon would be totally overexposed. So I went half-way and took two exposures. The moon is still a bit bright though and I hope we'll get some clear dark nights soon so I can try out my new camera (should come a bit closer, even if I don't have a TC).

Here is my moon shot. Taken a while back, but now I want to go out and take more :)

I like moon pictures better when they are not full moons.

Thanks. That is my favorite moon shot to date.(that I've captured)

I forgot to add that I had a Tamron 1.4 TC on there. in case anyone is wondering why my EXIF is so much different than the others.

Robert, glad you made the observation 'cuz the thought crossed my mind, too! I guess so many others would say "Those shots were right on, and PhotosGuy must have gotten lucky in his guess"?!?!?!
