I have a aerial shoot of a football game at night. I have never done a aerial shoot at night!
I know my shutter speed needs to go down and iso goes up. I will be using a 40d and a 17-55 lens.
Any recommendations would be greatly help!

I would think you'll still want to keep your shutter speed up. You're going to be shooting moving objects from a moving platform. High iso and wide open.

how far up?
the further you are from the action, the less shutter speed will matter

I will be in a helicopter in a hover. So a SS around 500 and 2.8 would be ideal.

When? Can you check the exact exposure there on the ground before you go up?
What are you trying to show in the images?

why? the further away you go, the longer the lens, the faster shutter you'll need. Sorry, I just can't see your theory.

The OP has stated that he's using a 17-55mm lens and also that he'll be in a helicopter - I think the shoot is of the stadium, not necessarily the game play action. So with that lens, the OP theoretically could get away with a SS of 1/60 - but I've never shot from a helicopter so I don't know if that would add to camera shake.

Its a new stadium and school. I think SS 1/60 is to slow. I can't hand hold 1/60 on the ground.
