It's been 2 months since i pointed the camera at anything Motorsport related, so on Sunday i made the 200 mile journey to Silverstone.

Now, it's not the track i'd normally choose to re-ignite my rapidly dwindling interest in Motorsports, but it seem to have done the trick. Even though i had to leave early it was a superb event that i thoroughly enjoyed!!

Anyway, enough of my pointless drivel, on with the show..

1. And they're off!. Alan McNish (Audi R15 TDi) leads Anthony Davidson (Peugeot 908 HDi) on the charge towards Copse Corner..

[IMAGE TOO SMALL, NOT RENDERED INLINE]

2. The filed charges into Copse. Sadly for McNish his race only lasted just over 30 minutes when he lost drive completely..
[IMAGE TOO SMALL, NOT RENDERED INLINE]

3. My favourite car from the GT2 class..
[IMAGE TOO SMALL, NOT RENDERED INLINE]

4. 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the early laps, although as i've mentioned already the #7 Audi didn't last very long..
[IMAGE TOO SMALL, NOT RENDERED INLINE]

5. The Beachdean-Mansell Ginetta-Zytek (what a mouthfull!). Yes, that Mansell, although Nigel was prevented from driving by the injuries he sustained in a crash at Le Mans in June.
Driving duties on the day were left to his sons, Greg & Leo.
[IMAGE TOO SMALL, NOT RENDERED INLINE]

6. Not the biggest car in the field but one of the best sounding GT2s. Aston Martin V8 Vantage.
[IMAGE TOO SMALL, NOT RENDERED INLINE]

7. The eventual race winner, Peugeot 908 HDi driven by Anthony Davidson & Nicolas Minassian. Even though Allan McNish led the early laps for Audi, Davidson and the Peugeot were visibly faster...
[IMAGE TOO SMALL, NOT RENDERED INLINE]

8. Anyone who was there will remember the sound of the Lola-Aston Martins. A fantastic soundtrack and Gulf livery - Motorsport at its best!
[IMAGE TOO SMALL, NOT RENDERED INLINE]

All the above were taken with the 7D & Sigma 500mm f4.5 EX (Because it's Silverstone). EXIF is intact for the voyeurs amongst you!

Fantastic shots Geoff. Like you I managed to get to Silverstone for the LMS event after a long break from Motorsport photography - I have been photographing lots of weddings over the summer instead. Difficult to get some motion blur in the wedding shots though!

Glad you had a good day at Silverstone. It was nice that the weather was unusually warm for Silverstone - We are not used to being treated to that!

Love the shot of the Aston Vantage. Lovely colour scheme on that car :D

I will get round to posting some of my photo's in the next couple of days hopefully.

Excellent shots!

I especially like the last one, but I'm a sucker for Gulf colors.

Very nice shots !!!

One question: The shots at the start of the race out of Copse into Maggotts done from the left side of the track, were these shot from behind the fence or did you have press access ?

The last time I was at Silverstone is quite some time ago. Also, it was raining all weekend then and I hardly moved around. This weekend I struggled finding some good spots to get some decent pictures from behind the fence.

I was together with the KSM crew and had a great blast. Their car is the #39 open Lola Judd. If you have any pictures of that one please post them.

I'm a sucker for anything in GUlf colours and the noise that engine makes is something else !!

It's been a long time since i can honestly say i enjoyed a visit to Silverstone, but the LMS was excellent...so much so i think i'll be at the Britcar 24 next month.

Hope you enjoyed your break as much as i did Kev :)

High praise indeed :p . To be honest it's not that bad a drive. Oulton Park is much closer but there's only 30-45 minutes difference in journey time...Motorways make life too easy.

.

They're all from Public areas so the Copse shots are from behind the T-Rex fence. Even though i've been to Silverstone a few times over the years, it's an angle i've never tried due to that fence.

As we had a 45 car grid i thought i'd give it a go this time and i'm quite glad i did. The fence has taken away a bit of quality IMO but you can't have everything, can you ?

I'll see what i have of the #39 car....

Don't mean to barge in on your thread Geoff, but I had a look through my shots from Saturday and found only one of the KSM Lola #39 taken down at Stowe Corner. Here it is hgb:

Great set Geoff.....

I also had a run down...we went on Friday night and to catch some of the CER..
What a great event looking forward to next year....camped next to some lads who went to Le Mans 24...well said they had been going for the last 16yrs...Trying to talk us into to giving it a go, after this event sure am tempted.

Both Lola-Aston Martins and the Vantage sounded the best cars in the field by far.

Alan
( hope to sort through all 1500-2000 pics very soon )

Thanks Kevin, that's Jonathan Kennard in the car. He was driving the second stint. Jean de Pourtales was the starting driver. Unfortunately, he got hit by one of the FLM cars which resulted in a lengthy pit stop to realign the suspension and fit a new rear hood. These 15 minutes were too much time lost for a podium. The last stint was done by Lucas OrdoƱez. The team still managed a third place in the Eco Challenge, though. I still have to sort out my pictures.

Thanks also to Andy, these are great pictures.

Alan, DO Le Mans in 2011 !!! I've been going for the past 11 years. If you enjoyed Silverstone you will be blown away by Le Mans.
