The D7000 is the successor to Nikon's D90. Here are the official specs from DPreview (http://dpreview.com/previews/nikond7000/ (external link)).

Key features:

  • 16.2MP CMOS sensor
  • Magnesium alloy body with weather sealing
  • 1080p HD video recording with mic jack for external microphone
  • ISO 100-6400 (plus H1 and H2 equivalent to ISO 12,800/25,600)
  • 39-point AF system with 3D tracking (9 cross points)
  • 100% pentaprism viewfinder
  • 2016 pixel metering sensor
  • Scene Recognition System (see 2016 pixel sensor, above) aids metering + focus accuracy
  • Twin SD card slots
  • 3.0 inch 921k dot LCD screen
  • New Live View/movie shooting switch
  • Full-time AF in Live View/movie modes
  • Up to 6fps continuous shooting
  • Lockable shooting mode dial
  • Built-in intervalometer
  • Electronic virtual horizon
  • AF Microadjust
  • Wireless flash commander (CLS)
  • Shutter tested to 150k actuations

Estimated price is $1200. That puts it in the same range as the 60D, but this camera seems to have the 60D beaten in every esingle category...It seems to be comparable with the 7D, but at a much lower cost.

No articulated LCD. Booooooooooooooo.

Well historically I believe Nikon offers more bang for you bucks in terms of body functions, so this isn't exactly new. Their lens are a whole different story however.

The lack of articulating LCD is the only area where the 60D wins. The D7000 is far ahead in just about every other respect. In fact, I would say the D7000 is pushing well into 7D territory for a price that's much lower.

As far as lens prices, I am not really sure if you can call Nikon out on having expensive lenses anymore. With Canon's newest round of lens releases (and price hikes), Canon's new glass isn't really good value for money either. I mean, come on, $1500 for a slow aperture 70-300mm zoom?

But 1700 pounds for their new 35mm F/1.4? Isn't that over $2600? Their 24mm F/1.4 is a few hundred more expensive too.

The specs put it too close to the D300s. The 'D400' would have to be like a 1Dmk4.
Basic kit lens is the 18-55VR rather than 18-105VR
This is Nikon reinventing their product line. 4 DX cams is too crowded (D3100, D5000, D7000, D300s), of course I'm excluding Sony APS-C lineup.

Edit - isnt this room for EOS Cameras only? heh. My bad the kit is 18-105VR.

Somebody posted in one of the other D7K Vs 60D/7D threads that you shouldn't just do a "street" money conversion.

The pricing structures are too different due to VAT and other things unique to the UK.

It's not just a straight 1.75:1 conversion.

Nikon's like a drug dealer: They give you a couple freebies (in this case incredibly performing camera body on the cheap and their superior CLS system), and then when you come back for more they make you pay (lenses). Still; so very tempting.

I love my 1D3; but I want full frame. The 5d's AF wont cut it for me. Please Canon: Put out a full frame camera with a decent AF? This way my mouth won't water when someone mentions Nikon...

Canon also has 4 APS-C cams. Rebel XS, Rebel T2i, EOS 60D, and EOS 7D. No different from Nikon.

My guess is it'll end up around the $2100 mark. About $800 more than the 35L. Still highway robbery if you ask me.

I know; i've looked. Still very pricey. I would also like good ISO performance, and video.

You didn't mention price...

You simply said you wanted FF with 1-series AF. ;)

You mean a D3s then? :D One of my staff photographers at the school newsletter shoots with one, and the ISO 6400 shots out of that thing looks like ISO 1600 shots out of my 5D :(

I know; sorry. I was trying to keep it short. But yes; I wish that there was a good affordable camera from Canon that was Full Frame, decent ISO performance, had a pro level auto focus (a la 7D), and video. Basically the D700 is my ideal camera; just add video. I am looking to dump my 5D soon and get another body; there's just nothing in Canon's current line up that makes me want to go out and buy right now (aside from the 1D4; it's just out of the budget right now).
