I LOL'd at the fact that the japanese consider their '70's cars as their "classics", decades after Europe and the US had "classics".

JCCS allows anything pre-1985. I would say anything more than 30 years old can be considered a classic.
You don't see many from before the 1970s because they weren't imported in mass quantities to the US. Prior to the oil crisis, big thirsty American V8s were perfectly acceptable.
