Use IS or Not

Newbie question for sure.

Have just acquired a new Canon 24-70L glass and use it on a T1i.
Photos are from good to quite good from a tripoid and sometimes with significant variation from shot to shot. Should I be using IS with this lens on a tripod?

The 24-70 doesn't have IS unless you received a prototype that no one knows about.

It wouldn't hurt to, right?

+1 unless you have a 24-105mm L

Yeah, the 24-70L doesn't have IS. But when your on a tripod and your taking images with a slower shutter speed, its probably good to turn it off because the IS mechanism will generate a little bit of vibration.

I'm not sure what lens do you mean, but don't use IS with tripod unless it has tripod detection.

I always leave the IS on, only on tripods I turn it of.

A tripod is the IS

I have heard rumors since 07' about canon making a 24-70mm 2.8 IS II but as far as i know that is still just a rumor and has not been done yet. although if you find a 24-70 with IS i would be very interested to see what we're talkinga bout here

Something here does not seem right... if it does not have IS, how do you turn it off?? I must say this thread has got me a bit confused

Well, fellows it got me so confused I reread my original post and saw I had entered the wrong lens. The camera was laying in front of me with the Canon lens and I exercised brain fade.

The real one in question is a Tamron 18-270. I bought this before I found it is worth the extra month of picking up beer cans along the interstate to get the L glass.

Anyway, thanks for the honest answers (and questions)

DEFINTELY turn off the IS with the Tammy; it's a good idea for any lens that doesn't have tripod detection build into the IS system, but that lens gets really bad blur from the IS is you don't turn it off (found out the hard way )

IS off while mounted to the tripod but on anytime else.
