I get tired of carrying around my main gear sometimes and got a point and shoot, but someties, I get frustrated with my P&S.

So here's my question, hows an old Rebel XT w/ kit lens vs. a top end P&S as far as IQ? Or a a 10D? What is the crappiest SLR that can trump a P&S?

A high end point and shoot like the S95 or G series can take nice pix, but I don't think they can compete with even an older dslr. The dslr has the advantage in sensor size and responsiveness.

a DSLR even as old as a Rebel series would still be better than a point and shoot imo. I try to carry a light DSLR as much as I can. that's why I havent gotten rid of my XT.

I gave my sister-in-law my original XT a while back w/ the kit lens and a 28-135. Kinda regretting it now.

I recently took a trip with an old 3MP D30 (not 30D) instead of a P&S and I thanked myself with each picture I took. Responsiveness, DOF, viewfinder- even that 10 year old DSLR was, in my opinion, better than even the newest, fanciest point and shoot.

I have a nice P&S the Powershot S3, and the old 10D.(both 6 megapixel) IQ is definitely better on the 10D, and the colors on the 10D are awesome.

I've been looking for a decent P&S for the last several months so I can have something quick and easy to carry in my pockets or glove box. I've purchased and returned about six different models now. No matter how much I try, I just can't find something I satisfied shooting with. I'm still using a seven year old Canon EOS 300D (the first digital rebel). It's a 6.3MP camera, but the images are better than the ones I am getting with all the different Nikon, Olympus, and Canon P&S models I've tried. I'm not printing anything out at huge sizes, but... at this point I'm trying to put the money together for a new body so I can have my 300D with old kit lens stowed in the glove box.

It's not broken, so the customer loyalty program does me no good :)

My sister, the professional baker and cake decorator once told me that my camera takes great pics. My reply was that I thought her oven baked great cakes.

My 10D w/28-135 IS is now my P&S ... at least around the house. I keep it ready, sitting on the dining room table should I want to get some quick shots. Having a house full of dogs it comes in handy!

Last week I was headed out to the store, grabbed my 10D, "just in case", and left. Decided to take a ride and then realized, somewhat in a panic, that I should have brought my other cameras. Still got some great shots but my mind was telling me I need the other camera :o 10D is still a great camera for everything I shoot with it!

A 350D will trounce a point and shoot any day..

I've owned a 350D which is now in the hands of my daughter.. I've had a G10 and now a G11.. At ISO settings under 400 ISO the 350D will sneak ahead in image quality, at 100 ISO not that much difference,, but shoot at 800 ISO or above the 350D will leave the G10/G11 for dead.. This is also true for the 20D..

Another point, DSLR cameras don't suffer from shutter lag like point and shoots do.. DSLRs handle so much better..

Your best option if you want something smaller would probably be one of the EVIL cameras. I've been toying with the idea of getting one of the Olympus Pens, or Sony Nex for just that reason. I know they are not P&S size, but they're definitely smaller than a dslr and with their larger sensors are capable of good results.

Yea, I looked into the PENS, but pretty expensive and I didn't want to start up a new lens collection. I figure cheap DSLR with buget lens might be my P&S. Not necessarily small, but much smaller that my main kit.
