Skylar and her mother contacted me to start her a portfolio..

they found me on facebook, because i have done some shots of her friend, so she wanted to give it a try..

She hasn't ever been in front of a pro camera before, so i would think she would be nervous but it turns out she was like a pro..

our process:

1. meet for 10 mins to talk about expected outputs.

2. looked at pose book and ipod touch for posing inspiration, being most of my clients don't know how to pose so i use this as examples of what to do then Skylar picked out her fav poses. (generally this cause a rift between mothers and daughter, because mothers are generally conservative and daughters want aggressive poses.. lol

3. discuss clothing choices ( and what was best for her build, locations, etc)

4. did some test shots of non smiling and smiling shots (worked on eyes, smirks, mouth open and or closed ) as it turns out we agreed non smiling was her best look.. when smiling eyes become smaller

5. went over how to do the lighting with mother, and how i have to test fire 3 shots to get to my settings before we started. the i let Skylar know once i get the light settings nailed down, then we can go live.

so with this process with all shoots with me, the team can get great results because every body knows what to do..

now the shots..

lighting was deep oct boombed camera left by mother @ 6 feet away

@ .9 on elinchrom scale

CameraCanon EOS 5D Mark II

i have many crops of this one and i can't figure out which one is the best..

lighting was elinchrom quadra with deep octa camera right.

i stretched my shutter sync to 1/250 on this one.. got away with going beyond the 5dmkII specs.. weird eh?

deep octa was boomed my mother @ about 6 feet camera right slightly downwards
power was 1.7 i think on the elinchrom scale

lighting on this was a yellow gel behind her with a 430EX @ 1/32 power triggered by the cactus v4's

and mother boomed the elinchrom quadra with the deep octa with first baffle on.. @ .4 power

the alley always provides me with privacy and a unique looking perspective.. plus it is free.. haha..

set up shot for Skylar and mother holding the elinchrom quadra and the 100 cm 39inch deep octa..

as you see the light weight set up is for running and gunning..

it is pricey but totally worth it..

"any mother can handle it" should be a motto for elinchrom haha

Always love your work and the story to go with it.
Only thing that is bugging me is in #4. The 'stuff' (whatever it is) behind her feet just seem too in focus compared to everything else around her. I keep looking at it.

Saw these pop up on flickr.
Very nice set as usual :)
I love the little story that goes with every shoot.

Man I wish I could come and assist you and learn some lighting techniques! :-/ I absolutely suck at artificial lighting :(

These are great. Also thanks for sharing a bit of your workflow. Can we see the shot from the setup shot? It just looks a bit busy in the background and I was curious hnow it turned out.

I was thinking about getting a similar setup I can take with me everywhere. Did you get the A or S Quadras?

Fantastic work as you always do! Thanks for all the details on your process with this client and the specs on each shot.

How long have you been using the Elinchrom light gear? I remember seeing some of your work with Alien Bees in the past. Do you recommend starting out with Bees and upgrading later or saving up for Elinchrom gear? We are getting by for now with a 580EXII & 430EXII, but would like to get some studio lights in the future.

I'd also like to thank you for the workflow example, That's the sort of info that is invaluable! Really hard to pick a fav, but i think it's #1 for me. ;)

Thanks for taking the time to describe everything. May I ask which pose books do you use?

These are good, as usual. The first one being flipped kind of bothers me, but most wouldn't notice unless they are in a set like this.

I'd go to jail.

But I like how you broke down the workflow and how you went about it. It seems like a damn good idea to confer with multiple people for best poses, facial emotion, clothing, so when it comes down to shoot time... you don't lose shots because of it.

He may have his own, specially as he has his ipod touch... There is a PDF that I could never find that is great. Well I found it and put a hotlink for it in my sig. Hope this helps!
